June 21, 2004 Tweflth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Cycle C

FIRST READING: Bar. 5: 1-9

"Jerusalem:God will show your splendor." Remove your sorrow for God will show your splendor to all nations. God has decreed the leveling of mountains and the filling of valleys to make your way easier for you.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 126 "What marvels the Lord has worked for us! Indeed we were glad."

SECOND READING:

Phil. 1: 4-6, 8-11 "Show yourselves sinless and without blame in the day of Christ."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Lk. 3: 4, 6 "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths: all mankind shall see the salvation of God."

GOSPEL: Lk. 3: 1-6

"All mankind shall see the salvation of God." The word of God came to John and he went through Jordan proclaiming the need to repent and reform.

FOCUS: "Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight." The herald cries the Lord is coming! Make straight his path, that is, make his way easier for him, by repenting in response to his love.

REFLECTION: The first vital step in saving outcasts consists in making them feel that some decent human being cares enough for them to take an interest in the question of whether they are to rise or sink.

William Booth,

founder of the Salvation Army

With God, nothing is lost.

St. Marguerite d‘Youville

Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths: all mankind shall see the salvation of God.

More Isaiah

Thou shalt no more have the sun for thy light by day,

Neither shall the brightness of the

moon enlighten thee.

But the Lord shall be unto thee an

everlasting light,

And thy God shall be thy glory.

Thy sun shall go down no more,

And thy moon shall not decrease.

For the Lord shall be unto thee an

everlasting light,

And the days of thy mourning

shall be ended.

Ch. 60: 19-20

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by proclaiming that a voice cries out in the wilderness of our hearts, ‘The Lord is Coming!' By repenting and reforming we make God's path easier for him, and us, and salvation can flow to all of us.

Penitential rite: Third form with second set of sample invocations.

Opening Prayer: See Alternate

Sample General Intercessions:

My sisters and brothers, we are called to make straight the path of God. Let us ask the Lord to guide us:

• For our world leaders, that through Jesus the Christ, they may see clearly the way of the Lord, which is, the way of love;

• For all peoples of the world, that hunger for peace and mercy motivate all to action;

• For our families and community, that by filling in the valleys of our love, God's grace can flow more easily to us all.

Memorial Acclamation: Second or third

The Lord's Prayer: With fourth introduction

Prayers over the people: First

Solemn Blessing in Advent

Faith Formation

John the Baptist urged people to repent of their sins, to prepare the path of the Lord. Making His way easier for him makes it easier and faster for the Gospel and salvation to reach everyone in the world. "All flesh shall see the salvation of the Lord. " Just think about that one for a while.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

During Advent we prepare for the birth of Jesus by repenting of our sins. We do this for our own benefit and for the benefit of everyone in the world: As soon as everyone has repented and is leading a life of loving kindness, the reign of God can begin.
