June 21, 2004 Tweflth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Cycle C

FIRST READING: Zeph. 3: 14-18

"The Lord will exult with you, he will renew you by his love." Shout for joy because God has driven away your enemies and brought you life. The day of the Lord will come he will dance for joy in your midst.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Is. 12 "Sing and shout for joy for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel."

SECOND READING: Phil. 4: 4-7

"The Lord is near." In his letter to the Phillipians, Paul urged them to be happy and tolerant.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Is. 61: 1 (Lk. 4: 18) "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he sent me to bring Good News to the poor."

GOSPEL: Lk. 3: 10-18

"What then, must we do?" The people asked John the Baptist what to do. He answered that they must share and act with virtue. Sensing their expectation, John told them that someone is to come who will baptize them in the Holy Spirit and fire.

FOCUS: "Rejoice, for the Lord is near!" We, like John the Baptist and the prophets, are called through the Holy Spirit to proclaim God's love .

REFLECTION: So, brethren, rejoice in the Lord, not in the world. That is, rejoice in the truth, not in the wickedness; rejoice in the hope of eternity, not in the fading flower of vanity. That is the way to rejoice. Wherever you are on earth, however long you remain on earth, the Lord is near, do not be anxious about anything.

St. Anthony of the Desert

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he sent me to bring Good News to the poor."

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: If the sprinkling rite is used, an introduction could emphasize our need for repentance.

Penitential rite: Third form with third set of sample invocations

Introduce the opening prayer by proclaiming that a voice cries out in the wilderness to be attentive to the word and actions of God. We, too, are commissioned by Christ to bring light to the people in our lives.

Sample General Intercessions:

Introduction: My brothers and sisters, we are called to bring the Good News to all. Let us ask God for the strength to accomplish what he asks.

• For the Holy Church of God and for her leaders, that through the Holy Spirit, it will lead us all to God;

• For all people in all cultures, that the Lord bless the world with peace and protect it with love;

• For all those deprived of freedom and all who are oppressed because of what they believe, that the message of Christ, the Good News of God's love, bring them great comfort;

• For our families and local community, that through the Holy Spirit we may bring the Good News of God's love to all those around us.

Introduce the Lord's Prayer by focusing on the coming of God's kingdom, a kingdom of love and mercy.

Faith Formation

John the Baptist proclaimed the coming of a new era, the era of the Lamb of God, the mediator. In this mediator we find a link between us and the eternal. Advent and Christmas are about this link.

We are commissioned in baptism to become prophets, that is to learn how to read the signs of the times to become more aware of God's love, and the awesome meaning of his words.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

St. Anthony of the Desert was the first Christian monk. He lived between AD 250 and AD 350 in Egypt. When he was 18 years old, he left his home and went to live in the desert. There, he prayed continually and did manual work. His holiness attracted many disciples to the monastic life to devote themselves to prayer and work.
