July 25, 2004 Seventeeth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING:

Sir. 3: 2-6, 12-14 "Those who fear the Lord honor their parents."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 128 "O Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways."

SECOND READING:

1 John 3: 1-2, 21-24 "We are called children of God, and so we are."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Col. 3: 15, 16 "May the peace of Christ rule in your hearts; and the fullness of his message live within you."

GOSPEL:

Lk. 2: 41-52 "His parents found Jesus sitting in the midst of the teachers."

FOCUS: "Jesus went down with them to Nazareth, and was obedient to them."

REFLECTION: You say that you have no humility or love. So long as these are absent, everything spiritual is absent. What is spiritual is born when they are born and grows as they grow... Humility is acquired by acts of humility, love by acts of love.

Theophane the Recluse

My brothers, Christ made love the stairway that would enable all Christians to climb to heaven. Hold fast to it, therefore, in all sincerity, give one another practical proof of it, and by your progress in it, make your ascent together.

Fulgentius of Ruspe

Watch your own step; be slow to criticize the doings of other people. When we criticize others, we get nothing for our pains; and how often we make mistakes! How care

"May the peace of Christ rule in your hearts; and the fullness of his message live within you."

lessly it can lead us into sin! ... Again and again our judgement about an issue depends on the way our sympathies are engaged; a personal preference can easily rob us of the power to see straight. This obstinacy in our own opinions would have less power to disturb our judgements if all the desire of our hearts found its only scope in God.

People are influenced in their actions by undercurrents of self-seeking. ... All seems to go well with them as long as everything turns out in accordance with their wishes, their plans; but when their wills are thwarted, they lose their balance and get angry ... Let awareness of our own self-seeking lead us to live a humble life following the teachings of Christ. St. Thomas Kempis

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Families can play a significant role in the celebration of today's liturgy as lectors, servers, ushers, bearers of the gifts, and musicians Keep in mind a broad sense of what constitutes a family. Many families consist of a single parent with one child, or one homeless person, or even two friends.

An introduction to the sprinkling rite: All those who are baptized in Christ are part of the Christian family. An introduction to the Lord's Prayer could mention kindness and dedication as building blocks in the structure of family life.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYER SELECTIONS:

Sprinkling rite or

Penitential rite: Third form with third set of sample invocations.

Preface: See Christmas Prefaces

Eucharistic Prayer: Roman Canon with the proper commemorations for Christmas.

Prayers Over the People: Second, sixth or seventh

Solemn Blessing for Christmas

Faith Formation

How can we strengthen family ties? Are you willing to change to meet family needs? Do you demand that others in your family change to suit you? Must we all change to accomodate each other? Can you make another person change?

There is really only one person you

can change and that is yourself. You can't change what others do, you can only change the way you react to what they do.

If there is no way to get along and you have decided to divorce, do you treat your ex-mate with respect? Or do you seek revenge? Will your revenge cut you off from God?

Children's Liturgy of the Word

Discuss the elements involved in strengthening family ties.

What are the qualities of a strong

family?

What can we learn from the family

of Mary, Joseph and Jesus?

In what ways do you see the

church as an extended family?

Reflect on a concept of family that goes beyond the nuclear family. The words of Jesus encourage us to seek the Lord in all types of people and to recognize others as members of God's family.
