June 21, 2004 Tweflth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Cycle C
July 25, 2004 Seventeeth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING: Is. 42: 1-4, 6-7 "Here is my servant, my chosen one in whom my soul delights." The true servant faithfully brings justice. The light of nations restores sight to the blind and frees the captives.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 29 "The Lord will bless his people with peace."

SECOND READING: Acts 10: 34-38 "God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

See Mk. 9: 6 "The heavens were opened and the Father's voice was heard: this is my beloved Son; hear him."

GOSPEL: Lk. 3: 15-16, 21-22

"Someone is coming who is more powerful than I am; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. There was a growing feeling that John might be the Christ. He declared that someone more powerful was coming. While Jesus was at prayer after his baptism, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit on in the shape of a dove. A voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, my favor rests on you."

FOCUS: "This is my beloved Son; on him my favor rests." Jesus is inaugurated into his earthly ministry.

REFLECTION: "Through Christ we see as in a mirror the spotless and excellent face of God. "

St. Clement of Rome

"Life is the strength to act. Spiritual life is the strength to act spiritually, according to the will of God. Man has lost this strength; therefore until it is restored to him, he cannot live spiritually, no matter how much he intends to. That is why the flow of grace into the soul of a believer is essential for a true Christian life. True Christian life is the life of grace. A man makes some religious resolution: but in order to be able to act according to it, it is necessary that grace be united with his spirit. When this union is present, moral strength, hitherto evident only temporarily in his first enthusiasm, is impressed on his spirit and remains there always. This re-establishment of the moral strength of the spirit is effected by the regenerating action of baptism, through which man is granted justification and the strength to act 'after God in righteousness and true holiness'."

Theophane the Recluse

Baptism of the Lord: Cycle C"The heavens were opened and the Father's voice was heard: this is my beloved Son; hear him."

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: The placement of this celebration at the end of the Christmas season should be noted. This is another manifestation of the incarnation. God made flesh is revealed to the world through baptism into his mission on earth. Today's gospel reading can be interpreted to signify our own need to go forth into the world with the Good News of God's salvation through Jesus Christ. This can be an appropriate time to call for lay ministers and to reflect how individuals can bring the light of Christ to others. Current lay ministers could contribute some piece in the bulletin or as part of the homily on the function and value of their ministry.

Sprinkling rite or

Penitential rite: Third form with third set of invocations.

Prayers over the people: Ninth

Solemn Blessing for Christmas

or

Faith Formation

In the Eastern Church there is a practice known as the "Poustinia" which is Russian for desert. It involves the practice of going into seclusion to pray. The object is to leave the distractions of the world temporarily so that peace and the awareness of God may be internalized and give one strength to live in the world.

To interiorize solitude is to be able to draw from that well of strength even in the clamor of daily life.

How can we keep some of the

wonder associated with Christ-

mas alive throughout the entire

year?

What are some of the memories of

this season you would like to hold

and draw strength from at other

times?

Children's Liturgy of the Word

Recount, with the children's help, the various activities and preparations that made this Christmas memorable. Perhaps some of the memories are negative ones. That's all right, life is made up of positive and negative memories. Ask the children to think about what they can learn from their experiences of this season. What can they do to remember the joys as well as the disappointments that make up this season?
