July 25, 2004 Seventeeth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING:

Is. 6: 1-2, 3-8 "Here am I! Send me." Isaiah saw the Lord, God in the sanctuary. He laments that he is a man of unclean lips among unclean people. One of the seraphs flew to him with a live coal from the altar. Touching his mouth with the coal, the seraph said "See now, this has touched your lips and your sin is taken away." The Lord asked, "whom shall I send?"

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 138 "In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, O Lord."

SECOND READING:

1 Cor. 15: 1-11 "So we preached and so you believed."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Mt. 4: 19 "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."

GOSPEL:

Lk. 5: 1-11 "They left everything and followed Jesus." After speaking to the crowd from a boat, Jesus instructed Simon to put out his net. They had caught nothing during the night. They immediately caught so many fish that the net began to tear. The disciples were overcome by the catch.

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: holiness, humility, vocation

FOCUS: "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."

REFLECTION: "He need have no fear of error in believing that God is calling him to contemplation, regardless of what sort of person he is now or has been in the past. It is not what you are nor what you have been that God sees with his all-

merciful eyes, but what you desire to be." The Cloud of Unknowing

Hold out, be steadfast, endure, bear the delay, and you have carried the cross. St. Augustine

You are a fire that takes away the coldness, illuminates the mind with its light, and causes me to know your truth. And I know that you are beauty and wisdom itself. The food of angels, you gave yourself to man in the fire of your love.

St. Catherine of Siena

More Isaiah

Thou shalt no more have the sun for thy

light by day,

Neither shall the brightness of the moon

enlighten thee.

But the Lord shall be unto thee an

everlasting light,

And thy God shall be thy glory.

Thy sun shall go down no more,

And thy moon shall not decrease.

For the Lord shall be unto thee an

everlasting light,

And the days of thy mourning shall be

ended.

:Ch. 60: 19-20.

"In the sight of the angels

I will sing your praises, O Lord."

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by stating that we have been commissioned to follow Jesus and that in doing so we will lead others. This is a responsibility we must not take lightly.

Opening Prayer: See alternate

Sample General Intercessions:

Introduction: Gathered together as brothers and sisters, let us call to mind that God is near and He always hears our prayer:

• For pastors and spiritual leaders everywhere, that they may lead in faith and serve in love the flock entrusted to their care;

• For a world hungry for true peace, that people search within for the solution to exterior strife;

• For our suffering sisters and brothers, that they may experience the closeness of God and have their sorrows turned to joy;

• For our community and families, that we learn what is truly important in life and follow that interior call.

Prayers over the people: Sixth or eleventh

Faith Formation

Jesus began his ministry in a little backwater village known as Galilee, Its inhabitants were considered on the fringe of accepted Jewish culture, people of marginal acceptability.

• Do you ever feel you are not ready

for God?

• Do you feel worthy of God’s love?

The reaction of the first disciples is an example of how to respond to the presence of Christ. The disciples followed Christ because the sheer power of his presence. We are urged to come to Jesus that our wills may unite with his. In this way we can answer, "Here I am, Lord," in the face of our own uncertainties.

Children’s Liturgy

of the Word

Ask the children what it means to be a "fisher of people."

• In what ways did Jesus fish for

followers?

• What is it in Jesus’ message that

moves people?

We follow Jesus by looking for goodness in our world. God is ready to burst forth with wonderful things for those who are looking for goodness.
