June 21, 2004 Tweflth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Cycle C
July 25, 2004 Seventeeth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING:

Jer. 17: 5-8 "Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings; blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord." The one who trusts in the Lord is like a tree by the waterside with its roots thrust into the stream.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 1 "Blessed are they who hope in the Lord."

SECOND READING:

1 Cor. 15: 12, 16-20 "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is in vain."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

See Mt. 11: 25 "Rejoice and be glad; your reward will be great in heaven."

GOSPEL:

Lk 6, 17:20-26 "Blessed are the poor, woe to you who are rich." Jesus preached that those who ar e hungry will be fed, those who weep shall laugh, and those who are full shall go hungry.

FOCUS: "Rejoice and be glad: your reward shall be great in heaven."

REFLECTION: "The inward stirring and touching of God makes us hungry and yearning; for the Spirit of God hunts our spirit; and the more it touches it, the greater our hunger and our craving. And this is the life of love in its highest working, above reason and above understanding; for reason can here neither give nor take away from love, for our love is touched by the Divine love."

Bl. Jan Van Ruysbroeck

"Our Lord does not come from Heaven every day to stay in a golden ciborium. He comes to find another Heaven, the Heaven of our soul in which He loves to dwell."

St. Therese of Lisieux

"Until all things become One for you, traced to One source and seen in One act of vision, you cannot find anchorage for the heart, or rest calmly in God. O God, you are the truth; unite me to yourself by an act of unfailing love!"

Thomas Kempis

"We have read enough, now we must act; we have watched enough how others walk, now we must walk ourselves." Theophane the Recluse

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by saying that through God's love, revealed to us by the sacraments, the hungry are fed and the thirsty are satisfied. Those who become full of pride will be hungry.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYER SELECTIONS:

Penitential Rite: Third form with eighth set of sample invocations.

Sample General Intercessions:

Gathered together in Christ, my brothers and sisters, let us pray to God, who does wondrous things:

• For the Holy Church of God, that it

remain attentive and awake to the

needs of all people;

• For those who work for peace and

mercy, that their vigilance may be

strengthened;

• For those in positions of authority,

that the Lord Jesus will guide them

to seek good for all humankind;

• For all those deprived of freedom be-

cause of what they believe or what

they are, that God will deliver them

from oppression;

• For our parish and local commu-

nity, that Christ will find us

watchful and ready at his coming.

Preface for Sundays in O.T.: Fifth

Introduce the breaking of the bread by reminding the congregation that the Eucharist infuses us with the loving, healing grace of Jesus Christ.

Prayers over the people: Twelfth or twenty-second.

Faith Formation

When we devote our lives to Jesus we must beware of the temptation to take pride in our accomplishments. Pride can destroy all we have attained, and we will go away from God's table hungry, through our own fault.

"If you could but realize what a difference it makes, a life well lived, the peace of mind it would bring you, the encouragement it would give to others, I can't help thinking you would be more deeply concerned about your progress in the spiritual life." Thomas Kempis

Children's Liturgy

of the Word

What are rewards of trusting in God, and the goodness of his purposes, in trusting that there is meaning to life, that God loves us and cares for us? The first reading says that if we trust only in things we see, we are like a dry bush in the desert. If we trust in God we are like a tree by the waterside, who is able to send its roots towards the stream. The stream is God's love. We have to trust him and do what he wants us to do, in order to live by the waterside of his love.
