July 25, 2004 Seventeeth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING:

1 Sam. 26: 2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23

"Though the Lord delivered you into my grasp, I would not harm you."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 103 "The Lord is kind and merciful."

SECOND READING:

1 Cor. 15: 45-49 "Just as we have borne the image of the earthly one, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Jn 13: 34 "I give you a new commandment, says the Lord, love one another as I have loved you."

GOSPEL:

Lk. 6: 27-38 "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."

SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: mercy, pardon, faith

FOCUS: "I give you a new commandment, says the Lord, love one another as I have loved you."

REFLECTION:

"Love your neighbor without expecting any return from him; what you do for him, Jesus counts as being done for Him."

St. Catherine of Siena

"People are influenced in their actions by undercurrents of self-seeking ... All seems to go well with them as long as everything turns out in accordance with their wishes, their plans; but when their wills are thwarted, they lose their balance and get angry ... Let awareness of our own self-seeking lead us to live a humble life following the teachings of Christ."

Thomas Kempis

"God has not called his servants to a mediocre, ordinary life, but rather to the perfection of a sublime

holiness since he said to his disciples: Be ye perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect."

Bl. Henry Suso

"Just as we have borne the image of the earthly one, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one."

"The Lord told us when smitten on one cheek, to turn the other also, but we are so sensitive that if a fly so much as brushes us with its wing in passing we are immediately up ine arms...And how can we be regarded as disciples of Christ if we do not obey His commandments?"

Theophane the Recluse

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by stating that, enlightened by the Word of God, and empowered through partaking of the Eucharist, we receive the grace necessary to follow Christ's commandments.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYER SELECTIONS:

Sample General Intercessions—

My sisters and brothers, we are called to lead our lives in a spirit of total mercy for others. Let us ask the Lord to guide us:

• For the people of God, that we may practice love and compassion for pure motives with no expectation of any reward, but becuse we love Him.

• For the peace and well-being of the whole world, that we allow God's grace to lead us to Him;

• For those who suffer from oppression, that they may be comforted by awareness of God's presence and love;

• For all those who hunger for consolation, that they receive the joyful message that God is here among us;

• For our families and community, that

through our love they are led to see God's grace in all people.

Preface for Sundays in O.T.: Sixth

An invitation to the Lord's Prayer could point out that it is God's grace that is leading us to pray.

Prayers over the people: Second

Faith Formation

We don't expect perfection from people, yet we are called to be pefect as God is perfect. God directs us to achieve what we cannot achieve alone. The call to love as God loves is only possible with God's help through Jesus Christ. It is a new commandment because it is only possible with Jesus.

Children's Liturgy

of the Word

Jesus tells us to love as he loves. By living as if Jesus is with us at all times, we can love people as Jesus would love. By keep the memory of Jesus in our hearts we can keep from acting in a way that we will later regret. To love as Jesus loved, means refraining from hurting people, even when we have the power to hurt them.
