July 25, 2004 Seventeeth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING:

Is. 43: 16-21 "See, I am doing something new and I give my people drink."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 126 "The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy."

SECOND READING:

Phil. 3: 8-14 "Because of Christ I consider everything a loss, being conformed to his death."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Joel 2: 12-13 "Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart; for I am merciful."

GOSPEL:

Jn. 8: 1-11 "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."

SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: forgiveness, pardon, justice, deliverance, justification

FOCUS: "Let the one without sin be the first to throw a stone."

REFLECTION: "No mother could snatch her child from a burning building more swiftly than God is constrained to succor a penitent soul, even though it should have committed every sin in the world a thousand times over."

Bl. Henry Suso

ANYWAY

People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.

Love them anyway

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives,

Do good anyway

If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies,

Succeed anyway

The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow,

Do good anyway

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable,

Be honest and frank anyway

What you spent years building may be destroyed overnight,

Build anyway

People really need help but may attack you if you help them,

Help people anyway

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth,

Give the world the best you've got anyway

Graffito at the children's home, Missionaries of Charity, Calcutta

"The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy."

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the sprinkling rite by focusing on the waters of baptism as being not only the waters of our salvation but of our well from which we draw mercy and compassion. Other introductions could focus on the need to question the sincerity of our repentance.

- Prayer of the faithful: see the

second sample form of interces-

sion for Lent

- Preface: see first or second gen

eral prefaces for Lent

Sample General Intercessions:

Introduction—My sisters and brothers, as Easter draws near let us earnestly pray to the Lord, that the entire world may come to share more fully in the life Christ brings us through his suffering, death, and resurrection:

• For world peace; that those in positions of power experience a rebirth of mind and heart;

• For all those who are helpless and abandoned: that they may achieve peace and security;

• For all those baptized at Easter: that through rebirth they may grow in faith and understanding;

• For our community and families: that we may learn to set aside our preoccupation with ourselves, and reach out in love to our brothers and sisters.

Solemn Blessing: See blessing for the Passion of the Lord.

Faith Formation

Spiritual rebirth involves determination and a willingness to lose oneself. Part of us dies and a new being begins to form. How far we developed this new being is up to us. Every day we must die to our selfishness in a million diferent ways and circumstances. We must die to narrow mindedness and prejudice within us.

• In your spiritual journey, do you

feel that part of you is dying?

• Do you fear losing your identity

by taking on that of Christ?

Christ came that we may fulfill our destinies as children of God.

• How do we lose ourselves yet

retain ourselves ?

Children's Liturgy of the Word

(Based on cycle A readings)

• How has death touched our lives?

• What are the feelings associated

with death?

Share the gospel image of Jesus weeping for Lazarus. Death is a sad experience but it is not the end.

Explain the life cycle of a perennial plant making the connection that we will live again. We in some way will have eternal life. We will go through different stages like a plant but our death will lead to a new life.
