June 21, 2004 Tweflth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Cycle C
July 25, 2004 Seventeeth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING: Is. 66: 10-14

"I will send toward Jerusalem peace like a river. "

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 66 "Cry out with joy to God, all the earth."

SECOND READING:

Gal. 6: 14-18 "The marks I carry on my body are those of Jesus Christ."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Col. 3: 15, 16 "May the peace of Christ rule in your hearts; and fullness of his message live within you."

GOSPEL: Lk. 10: 1-12, 17-20 "Your peace will rest upon him."

Seventy-two appointed disciples were sent out by Jesus. They were instructed to enter each house they with a blessing of peace. If peace was not received they were to leave. Upon their return Jesus told them to rejoice ; their names are written in heaven.

FOCUS: The glory and joy of our church, past, present and future lie in the ministry of healing, preaching and sharing of the Lord's peace. The focus today could be considered evangelical. The first reading and the Psalm echo the sound of rejoicing, a message found in today's gospel: Rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

REFLECTION: "If teaching and preaching is your job, then study diligently and apply yourself to whatever is necessary for doing the job well. Be sure that you first preach by the way you live. If you do not, people will notice that you say one thing, but live otherwise, and your words will bring only cynical laughter and a derisive shake of the head." St. Charles Borromeo

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ: in all my trials and sufferings you have given me the strenth to stand firm; in your mercy you have granted me a share of eternal glorty

Irenaeus, Greek Prelate

"Why is it that things are not going well with you just now? I think it is because you wish to remember the Lord, forgetting worldly affairs. But worldly affairs intrude into your consciousness and push out the remembrance of the Lord. What you should do is just the reverse: you should busy yourself with worldly affairs, but think of them as a commission from the Lord, as something done in His presence. As things are now, you fail both on the spiritual and on the material level. But if you act as I have explained, things will go well in both spheres.

Theophane the Recluse

Cry out with joy to God,

all the earth.

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Consider using the Sprinkling Rite with an introduction reflecting that through our baptism we were commissioned to carry God's message of love to all. Today's homily could focus on the many and varied ministries parishioners are involved in. Introduce the sign of peace by emphasizing peace is a precious gift to the world from God. Only in peace can love and wisdom flourish.

General Intercessions-

Introduction: My sisters and brothers, let us turn our prayers to God who inscribes our hearts with peace:

- That Christians everywhere may be responsive to the word of God and bear witness to the gospel,

That all who have grown complacent in faith may turn to God again and be reconciled as bearers of the gospel,

- That our community and families who welcome Christ into their lives, learn to receive him in all peoples throughout the world.

Eucharistic Prayer: 4

Prayers over the People: 20 or 23

Faith Formation

- Do we have the power to heal as the disciples did?

The same power used by the disciples of Jesus in their healing is still with us and available to us today. Power, Spirit-power, is the ability to love. Only God has that ability, but we all share in it to the degree we are able to love. For those who love enough, anything is possible.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

"You can do nothing with children unless you win their confidence and love by breaking through all the hindrances that keep them at a distance. We must accommodate ourselves to their tastes, we must make ourselves like them." St. John Bosco

Talk about being a peace maker.

- What does it mean to be a

builder of bridges between

people?

- How do we bring about peace

in our daily lives?

- How does being helpful

contribute to peacefulness?

- What kind of reward does

today's gospel speak of?
