June 21, 2004 Tweflth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Cycle C
July 25, 2004 Seventeeth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING:

Rev. 11: 19, 12: 1-6, 10 "I saw a woman clothed with the sun and with the moon beneath her feet."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 45 "On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir."

SECOND READING:

1 Cor 15:54b-57 "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

"Mary is taken up to heaven, and the angels of God shout for joy."

GOSPEL:

Lk. 1:39-56 "He who is mighty has done great things for me; he has exalted the humble."

Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth. The child in Elizabeth's womb leaps and Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit.

FOCUS: We share a common destiny with Mary who is the model for the church. She is a model of humility, determination, and love of God.

REFLECTION: The Divine Spirit, the love itself of the Father and the Son, came corporally into Mary, and enriching her with graces above all creatures, reposed in her and made her His Spouse, the Queen of Heaven and Earth.

St. Anselm of Canterbury

Through thee, [Mary, Mother of God] idolatrous creatures have known incarnate truth, the faithful have received baptism, churches have been erected in all parts of the earth. By thine assistance the Gentiles have been brought to repentance. And finally, through thee, the only Son of God, source of all light, has shone upon the eyes of the blind, who were sitting in the shadow of death.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem

"He who is mighty has done great things for me; he has exalted the humble."

The Blessed Virgin Mary, by becoming Mother of God, received a kind of infinite dignity because God is infinite; this dignity therefore is such reality that a better is not possible, just as nothing can be better than God.

St. Thomas Aquinas

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Focus on Mary's destiny, and ours.

Introduce the liturgy: the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a proclamation of the sanctification of the material world that was achieved by her Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

General Intercessions:

Introduction: My dear sisters and brothers, God our Father, the God of mercy has raised the Virgin Mary to the glory of heaven. Let us pray with Mary to the Father, in whose presence she now dwells:

•For the Church of God, that we may serve the Lord in humility and simplicity;

• For peace and well-being of the whole world, that God's gift of eternal life be honored;

• For those who suffer from hunger, sickness, or loneliness, that we may bring them the love of Christ;

• For our community and our families, for all of us, for me and for you, may we see God in all God's creatures.

Preface: For the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Introduce the breaking of the bread stating that this is the food that gives humility, courage and strength necessary to fulfill the purpose of our lives as Christians, that is, to bring the Good News of eternal life through love to the whole world.

Concluding Rite:

Solemn Blessing: Solemn Blessing of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Faith Formation

Paul is speaking allegorically to the Corinthians. What was he trying to say? How would you put the truth that Paul was trying to convey? How about: Just as Jesus lives eternally, so will we. Or: Those who don't love better start doing it or they are going to be pretty darn sorry. Something like that? How about, "He that loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is love." I John: 4

Jesus loved his mother. Do you? Listen to her words. Observe her life. The Faith Formation comments on the Planning Page for Trinity Sunday will be useful here, too.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

Ask the children what kind of a person they think Jesus' mother may have been.

• What are some words we would

associate with Mary's nature?

• What clues does today's gospel

have regarding Mary?

Read the gospel twice to the children asking them to listen carefully to the words of Mary, the words of a brave and courageous person. Talk about the qualities of simplicity and conviction.
