June 21, 2004 Tweflth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Cycle C
July 25, 2004 Seventeeth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING: Sir. 3: 17-20, 28-29 Humble yourself and you will find favor with the Lord.

Be gentle in carrying out your work. The greater you are, the more humble you should be.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 68 "In your goodness, O God, you have prepared a home for the poor."

SECOND READING: Heb. 12: 18-19, 22-24 You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Mt. 11: 29 "Take my yoke upon you; learn from me, for I am gentle of heart."

GOSPEL: Lk. 14: 1, 7-14

Those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Jesus goes for a meal at the home of one of the leading Pharisees. Seeing how the guests picked the places of honor, Jesus tells them a parable about a wedding feast and humility.

FOCUS: "Take my yoke upon you; learn from me, for I am gentle of heart." By responding to the Lord's invitation we enter into salvation. We must live the life of humility and refrain from exalting ourselves over the dispossessed

REFLECTION: "Blessed is the servant who esteems himself no better when he is praised and exalted by people than when he is considered worthless, simple, and despicable; for what a man is before God, that he is and nothing more."

St. Francis of Assisi

"Have you still preserved your state of spiritual warmth? It should be preserved. Its basis is humility. As soon as humility decreases, coolness enters. For when the soul begins to regard itself as something important, the Lord at once withdraws; and, left by itself, the soul grows cold. It is not just with the tongue that we should keep saying 'I am nothing', but we should feel our nothingness in the heart. Then the Lord will always be there, He who creates and has created everything out of nothing. The Lord will give warmth, but we must do our part as well.

What then, can we contribute to this work? Humility and attention, and a suffering submission to God in the depths of the heart, which should continue unceasingly whatever we may be doing or saying, whether we are sitting down or moving about, whether at home or in church. May the Lord grant you wisdom. Read holy writings, reflect upon them, and absorb all that is useful, applying it to your life and to your soul." Theophane the Recluse

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy with the idea that the ways of God are often contrary to the ways of the world. Rather than exulting in our righteousness we are to be humble, caring for the afflicted and less fortunate. Focus the general intercessions on the need for a true

conversion to humility among the church, government, and community. Invite the assembly to communion by stating that in the Eucharist we have a covenant in which we meet Jesus in all humankind.

Sample General Intercessions—

Introduction: My brothers and sisters, may all who follow Christ reject what is contrary to the gospel. Let us pray to God, to bring the seeds of the gospel to bloom on earth.

• For all those who gather in the Holy Spirit of God, that he will help them to be faithful to their baptismal call,

• For peace among nations, that God may rid the world of violence, and let us serve him in freedom,

• For the aged who suffer from loneliness and infirmity, that we will sustain them by our lives,

• For all of us gathered here, that God will teach us to use wisely the good things he has given us, that they will lead us closer to him and to eternal blessing.

Preface: 6 for Sundays in Ordinary Time

Solemn Blessing: 4 or 5 for Sundays in Ordinary Time

Faith Formation

There is an expression, "I AM THIRD", meaning God first, my neighbor second, and I am third.

• In what ways do I put myself first?

• What habits have you grown up

with that run contrary to the way

of humility?

It sometimes seems frightening to give one's will over to God. By reining in our desires and impulses, by giving up ourselves or what we think is ourselves we actually come to know our inner selves.

• What elements of your will have

you struggled with in your

journey of faith?

Meditate on the words of St. Bernard: "In those respects in which the soul is unlike God, it is also unlike itself."

Children's Liturgy of the Word

Look up and discuss the words: humble and humility. Read the definition that focuses on the favorable sense. Derived from the word, "humus" meaning soil or earth, relate this meaning to our being ourselves, content with who we are, never trying to be someone else.
