July 25, 2004 Seventeeth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING: Ex. 17: 8-13

"As long as Moses kept his arms raised, Israel had the advantage."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 121 "Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth."

SECOND READING:

2 Tim. 3: 14 - 4: 2 "This is how the man of God becomes equipped and ready for every good work."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Hebrews 4: 12 "The word of God is living and active; it probes the thoughts and motives of our heart."

GOSPEL: Lk. 18: 1-8

"God will see those who cry out to God vindicated." Using the parable of the unjust judge and the persistent widow, Jesus taught his disciples the need to pray constantly.

FOCUS: Persistence is essential in all matters, so that we become ever mindful of God.

REFLECTION: "'Pray without ceasing', St. Paul writes to the Thessalonians (1 Thess. 17). And in other epistles, he advises: 'Pray always with all supplication in the spirit' (Eph. vi. 18), 'continue in prayer and watch in the same' (Col. 1v. 2), 'continuing to stand in prayer' (Rom. xii. 12). Also the Saviour Himself teaches the need for constancy and persistency in prayer, in the parable about the importunate widow, who won over the unrighteous judge by the persistency of her appeals (Luke xviii, 1-8). It is clear from this that unceasing prayer is not an accidental prescription, but the essential characteristic of the Christian spirit. The life of a Christian, according to the Apostle, 'is hid with Christ in God' (Col. iii. 3). So the Christian must live in God continuously, with attention and feeling: to do this is to pray without ceasing. We are also taught that every Christian is 'the temple of God', in which 'dwelleth the Spirit of God' (I Cor. iii. 16; vi. 19; Rom. viii. 9). It is this 'Spirit', always present and pleading in him, that prays within him 'with groaning that cannot be uttered' (Rom. viii. 26), and so teaches him how to pray without ceasing. It is clear to everyone that the advice of the Apostle is not carried out merely by the practice of established prayers at certain set hours, but requires a permanent walking before God, a dedication of all one's activities to Him who is all-seeing and omni-present, an ever-fervent appeal to heaven with the mind in the heart. The whole of life, in all its manifestations, must be permeated by prayer. But its secret is love for the Lord. As the bride, loving the bridegroom, is not separated from him in remembrance and feeling, so the soul, united with God in love, remains in constancy with Him, directing warm appeals to Him from the heart. 'He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit'(I Cor. vi. 17). Theophane the Recluse

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY:

Penitential rite: Third form with first or fifth set of sample invocations

Opening Prayer: Alternate

Introduce the general intercessions by emphasizing that as the widow persevered until she was heeded, so too must we persevere in our private and communal prayer.

- For all who have dedicated themselves to God, that the Holy Spirit strengthen and support them in their work;

- For peace among nations, that the love of God be seen in our actions;

- For the aged who suffer from loneliness and infirmity, that they may experience the closeness of God's spirit

- For all of us gathered here, that God will lead us ever-closer to Him and to the eternal blessings he promises.

Introduce the Lord's Prayer by suggesting that Jesus taught us to pray constantly by speaking of God as Abba, showing us a personal God with whom we can communicate interiorly.

Faith Formation

Prayers of praise, supplication, gratitude, and glorification, as taught in the Lord's prayer will bring you ever-closer to God. Elaborate on those kinds of prayer in your communication with God. Silent prayer may be without conscious thoughts, a simple being with God, loving Him. Listening to Him.

- How can you pray always in spite of having a busy life?

Discuss the various forms of structured and unstructured prayer, such as the Rosary, the Jesus Prayer, Liturgy of the Hours, and private prayer. Dwelling in God's Love is another way of praying always. Look for the good in people as a form of prayer. Cultivate a peaceful life-style so you have time to think about God.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

When you pray to God, first praise Him: "Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed by thy name." Then ask Him to give you what you need, but don't ask for special favors or special signs. Don't ask God to do your work for you. Next, thank Him for what He has given you. Last, glorify Him, by being very aware of His presence and telling Him you are aware of His Glory.
