October 22, 2006 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle B

FIRST READING:
Is. 53: 10-11 "If he offers his life in atonement, he shall see his heirs and have long life."
Through suffering God as servant we justify many, taking on their faults.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 33 "May your love be upon us, O Lord, as we place all our hope in you."

SECOND READING:
Heb. 4: 14-16 "Let us be confident in approaching the throne of grace."
In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who has experienced all forms of temptation, who is truly capable of understanding our weaknesses.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Mk. 10: 45 "The Son of Man has come to serve and to give his life for the redemption of many."

GOSPEL:
Mk. 10: 35-45 "The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for many."
Two of the disciples ask Jesus for permission to sit at his right hand when he "comes in glory." Jesus responded that those positions were not his to give. Anyone who wants to be great must be the servant of all.

FOCUS: "The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for many."

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS:
The Son of Man; Faith; Hope; Trust

REFLECTIONS:
ANYWAY
People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.
Love them anyway
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives,
Do good anyway
If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies,
Succeed anyway
The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow,
Do good anyway
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable,
Be honest and frank anyway
What you spent years building may be destroyed overnight,
Build anyway
People really need help but may attack you if you help them,
Help people anyway
Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth,
Give the world the best you've got anyway
Graffito at the children's home, Missionaries of Charity, Calcutta

"If you should ask me what are the ways of God, I would tell you that the first is humility, the second is humility and the third is still humility. Not that there are no other precepts to give, but if humility does not precede all that we do, our efforts are fruitless." St. Augustine

"Love God with all your heart, and you've nothing to fear; death or punishment, judgement or hell; love, when it reaches its full growth, is an unfailing passport to God's presence." Thomas a Kempis

"May the Lord help you to be fully alive and to preserve sobriety. But do not forget the chief thing, to unite the attention and mind with your heart, and remain there unceasingly, before the Lord. Every effort that you make in prayer must be directed towards this. Pray to the Lord, that He may give you this blessing: it is the treasure hidden in the field, the pearl beyond price." Theophane the Recluse

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduction to the Liturgy: The mystery of the Incarnation is presented here in clear terms. We had fallen into sin, and one of us had to atone for our sin. That one of us was Jesus, true man and true God. This pure, divine person ransomed us so that once again we were pure enough to be in the presence of God. To imitate Christ, to be dedicated to him, is to be of service to all.

Sample General Intercessions:
Introduction: Gathered together in Christ as sisters and brothers, let us pray to God and thank him for his great mercy in sending us his son as a ransom:
For the holy Church of God: that our focus remain spiritual;
For peace among nations, that we may rid our hearts and thus the world of violence;
For the aged who suffer from loneliness and infirmity, may we actively comfort them with our love;
For all of us gathered here, that God will teach us to use wisely the good things he has given us, that they will lead us ever closer to divine love.

Preface: First for Sundays in Ordinary Time

Introduce the breaking of the bread by saying this bread gives us the essential grace and strength to live up to the ideals of the gospel.

Concluding Rite:
Prayers over the People: Twenty-second.

Faith Formation/RCIA
If we desire high position and authority in the church, we are not suited for it. Instead, we must desire to help people, to love them.
The position at the right hand of Jesus is not his to give. It must be earned by the disciple.
This is the essence of Christian morality. To be great we must love with humility.

Children's Liturgy of the Word
Jesus said he did not come here to be served, but to serve, and we must do the same. We must serve God by helping the poor and sick, by being kind to everyone, by making others happy. Can you do that? Sure you can, with a little practice. Try making people happy - you'll like it.
