FIRST READING:
Job 7: 1-4, 6-7 I am filled with sorrow all day long.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 147 Praise the Lord who heals the broken-hearted.

SECOND READING:
1 Cor. 9: 16-19, 22-23 Punishment will come to me if I do not preach the gospel.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Mt. 8: 17 He took our sickness away, and carried our diseases for us.

GOSPEL:
Mk. 1: 29-39 He cured many who suffered from disease of one kind or another.

FOCUS: And the fever left her and she began to wait on them. Just as Jesus revived Peters mother-in-law, so too he raises us up so that we may serve others.

scriptural topics: healing, sorrow/happiness, burden/joy, service, mercy.

REFLECTION: Let us adore Jesus in our hearts, who spent thirty years of thirty-three in silence; who began his public life by spending forty days in silence; who often retired alone to spend the night on a mountain in silence. He who spoke with authority, now spends his earthly life in silence. Let us adore Jesus in the eucharistic silence.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta

He need have no fear of error in believing that God is calling him to contemplation, regardless of what sort of person he is now or has been in the past. It is not what you are, nor what you have been that God sees with his all-merciful eyes, but what you desire to be.
Anonymous, The Cloud of Unknowing

There is much suffering in the world... Some suffer from hunger, from homelessness, from all kinds of diseases. But the greatest suffering is being lonely, feeling unloved, having no one. I have come more and more to realize that it is being unwanted that is the worst disease that any human being can ever experience.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta

He took our
sickness away,
and carried our diseases for us.

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by proclaiming that as Jesus restored Simons mother-in-law, so too does he restore us and relieve us of the anguish of living.

Sample General Intercessions:
Introduction: My dear sisters and brothers, God is compassion and knows our physical and spiritual needs. Let us pray to the Lord who heals the broken-hearted.

¥ For the Holy Church of God, that with GodÔs grace, we may heal the divisions among us followers of Jesus; for it is supremely sad that Christians fight each other;
¥ For all people of the world, that the divisions created by greed and revenge be replaced by a unity in our love of one another;
¥ÊFor those deprived of freedom and all who are oppressed because of their beliefs, that their sadness be healed;
¥ For all women who suffer cruelty and mistreatment, that the Lord will comfort and strengthen them;
¥ For ourselves and our community, that we recognize Christ who leads us to the Father and eternal life in paradise.

Preface for Sundays in O.T.: Third

Introduce the breaking of the bread by saying that the unlimited healing power of Jesus is present in this very bread. This bread was given to us by Jesus for the purpose of healing and strengthening us by bringing us closer to him.

Prayers over the people: Seventh

Faith Formation
Jesus helps us to find the strength to respond to God with love. This is what the journey of the catechumen is all about: to learn to be closer to God through Jesus, and in turn closer to each other.

Childrens Liturgy
of the Word
Invite the children to imagine they are in a quiet, peaceful place, maybe a beautiful forest in the early morning. What would they hear? How would they feel?

Jesus got up early and went to quiet places. He went to pray and be close to God. Todays gospel tells a story of healing and praying. Encourage the children to find their own quiet time to reflect and find their strength in God.
