May 4, 2003 Third Sunday of Easter Cycle B

FIRST READING:

Acts 3: 13-15, 17-19 "You have killed the author of life." God, however, raised him from the dead.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 4 "Shine the light of your fac e upon us, O Lord."

SECOND READING:

1 Jn. 2: 1-5 "Jesus Christ is the sacrifice that takes away our sins and those of the whole world."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

See Lk. 24: 32 "Lord Jesus, make your word plain to us, make our hearts burn with love when you speak."

GOSPEL:

Lk. 24: 35-48 "He himself stood before them and said tothem, ÔPeace be with you!'"

FOCUS: "It was written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise again." Jesus appeared and ate with the disciples. He opened their minds to the meaning of the scriptures.

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: Word/Eucharist, fulfillment, joy, hope, revelation, scripture, path of life.

REFLECTION: "Our Lord does not come from Heaven every day to stay in a golden ciborium. He comes to find another Heaven, the Heaven of our soul in which He loves to dwell."

St Therese of Lisieux

"He need have no fear of error in believing that God is calling him to contemplation, regardless of what sort of person he is now or has been in the past. It is not what you are nor what you have been that God sees with his all-merciful eyes, but what you desire to be."

Anonymous, The Cloud of Unknowing

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by saying today's gospel challenges us to open our minds to the significance of Christ in our lives.

Rite of Blessing and sprinkling with Holy Water.

Sample General Intercessions: My brother and sisters, with joy at Christ's rising from the dead, let us trust that the God who heard and answered the prayers of Christ will hear our petitions:

¥ For religious leaders everywhere: that they may serve well those who trust them;

¥ For those who suffer loneliness and dessertion: that their sorrow be turned to everlasting joy in awareness of Christ resurrected;

¥ For our friends and families, that in peace we may all bear witness to Christ's resurrection;

¥ That we who hunger for spiritual ressurection, may follow the way laid out for us by Jesus Christ, the way of love and peace;

¥ That we may abandon anger and self-righteous indignation, and that we may forego judging others. Jesus said, "Judge not." Instead of judging our friends and relatives, let us just love them, like Jesus does.

Peace be with you

Faith Formation

This season is one of new beginnings. Let us begin now to lead our lives according to the way offered by Jesus, in peace with love for all. Let us renew our devotion to mercy. Let us abandon old personal grievances, leaving final justice to be meted out by the only One who knows everything, God Himself.

Song suggestions:

Children's Liturgy

of the Word

Make the connection that just as Jesus revealed his identity to the disciples in the breaking of the bread, he reveals himself to us through the Eucharist.

¥ How can we learn more about Jesus Christ?

Sometimes when we are really upset we forget things. If, for instance, we are mad at someone, we can forget their good qualities, thinking only about the things we're mad about. If we are angry we may not see the beauty in life.

¥ Can we learn about Jesus if we are angry at his loved ones? If we are angry at those whom Jesus loves, how can we love Him?

¥ Why does Jesus say ÔPeace be with

you?'

¥ Why do we pray for peace?

When we are at peace we can think better, we can see things better. When we are angry, our minds are too clouded to see. Let us live in peace with our friends and family; after all Jesus loves everyone. How could we not love one whom Jesus loves? Let us see Jesus in everyone, everyone. "Love one another as I have loved you."
