May 18, 2003 Fifth Sunday of Easter Cycle B
FIRST READING:
Acts 9: 26-31 "He explained how the Lord appeared to Saul and spoke to him on his journey."
RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 22 "You, Lord, I will praise in the great assembly."
or
"Alleluia"
SECOND READING:
1 Jn. 3: 18-24 "His commandments are these, that we believe and love one another."
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Jn. 15: 4, 5 "Live in me and let me live in you, says the Lord: my branches bear much fruit."
GOSPEL:
Jn. 15: 1-8 "He who lives in me, and I in him, bears much fruit."
FOCUS: "Make your home in me as I make mine in you." Jesus, the true vine, proclaims that as part of the vine we must remain in him if we are to live and grow.
scriptural topics: love, remain in Christ, Church, discipleship.
REFLECTION: By the word of His power He gathered us out of all lands, from one end of the earth to the other end of the world, and resurrected our minds, and forgave our sins, and taught us that we are members one of another.
St. Anthony of Egypt
You have a book? Then read it, reflect on what it says, and apply the words to yourself. To apply the content to oneself is the purpose and fruit of reading. If you read without applying what is read to yourself, nothing good will come of it, and even harm may result. Theories will accumulate in the head, leading you to criticize others instead of improving your own life.
Theophan the Recluse
Accustom yourself continually to make many acts of love, for they enkindle and melt the soul.
St. Teresa of Avila
Remain in me as I remain in you, says the Lord
APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: A pre-Mass invocation to the Holy Spirit would be an appropriate way to begin the liturgies between now and Pentecost. A fraction rite Lamb of God could include images from today's gospel, e.g., Jesus as the vine which bears much fruit, ourselves as members of the vine bearing much fruit. Explain what this means to the congregation.
Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling with Holy Water
Sample General Intercessions:
Gathered together, as brothers and sisters, let us ask God to let his love shine through us:
„ For our Holy Church, that it may ever be pleasing to God the Father and His blessed Son;
„ For the world in which we live: that our respect for it and each other be expressed in world-wide peace;
„ For all those who suffer from loneliness and infirmity: that God may give them strength and courage;
„ For our community and families: that we may always value our ties and bonds with each other.
Preface: Third for Easter,
or
Solemn Blessing of the Easter Season.
Faith Formation
"For cut off from me, you can do nothing." We are rooted in God and connected to each other through Jesus. Jesus is the fruitful vine that connects us all to God. Only through him can we do as God wants us to do, to be what God wants us to be.
People make up the Church, the body of Christ, people who love one another. What can we do to show others our love and respect for them? Can we all act together to improve our spiritual lives, through the teachings of Jesus, Our Risen Lord?
What is the fruit we bear as members of Christ's body? Love. More love and mercy in the world. That is the fruit of Christ the vine.

of the Word
Compare the Christian community to a flock of geese. They fly in a V formation for a good reason: by flying in this formation there is less wind on thenm and it is easier to fly. That is, except for the lead goose. The first goose has it the most difficult, so they rotate who will take the lead. In this way no one goose gets too tired. They work together and benefit from cooperating. The geese who wander away from the formation have a harder time. Tie this image to our need to work together as a community, in faith. Cooperation among us Christians will increase peace and mercy throughout the whole world.
