June 1, 2003 Seventh Sunday of Easter Cycle B

FIRST READING:

Acts 1: 15-17, 20-26 "We must therefore choose someone who has been with us the whole time, and he can act with us as a witness to his resurrection."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 103 "The Lord has set his sway in heaven."

or

"Alleluia"

SECOND READING:

1 Jn. 4: 11-16 "The one who lives in love, lives in God, and God in him."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Jn. 14: 18 "The Lord said: I will not leave you orphans. I will come back to you, and your hearts will dance."

GOSPEL:

Jn. 17: 11-19 "Father may they be one with us ."

FOCUS: "Father, may they be one with us." We are called to live God's love and saving grace.

scriptural topics: coming of Holy Spirit, mission, prayer, witness, unity.

REFLECTION: The eyes of the world see no further than this life, as mine see no further than this wall when the church door is shut. The eyes of the Christian see deep into Eternity.

St. John Vianney

God is purity himself; nothing impure can come before him. I don't think God can hate, because God is love and he loves us inspite of our misery and sinfulness. He is a loving Father and we have only to turn to him. God cannot hate; God loves because he is love, but impurity is an obstacle to seeing God.

Mother Teresa

of Calcutta

Until all things become One for you, traced to One source and seen in One act of vision, you cannot find anchorage for the heart, or rest calmly in God. O God, you are the truth; unite me to yourself by an act of unfailing love!

Thomas Kempis

Too late I loved you, O Beauty so ancient yet ever new! Too late I loved you! And behold, you were within me, and I out of myself, and there I searched for you.

St. Augustine

He that loveth not knoweth not God, for God is love.

I John: 4

My God, I love you.

Father, may they be one with us

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Focus on the coming of the Holy Spirit. The presence of the Holy Spirit leads the church into prayer and a deeper understanding of the paschal mystery. Introduce the liturgy with the statement that through the Holy Spirit the church was and is held together. A suitable response to the general intercessions is, "Come through the Holy Spirit."

SUGGESTED PREFACE AND PRAYER SELECTIONS:

Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling with Holy Water

Preface: First for Ascension

Solemn Blessing for the Ascension

Faith Formation

The role of the Holy Spirit can be further explored. Look at the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom for an example of the prominence of the Holy Spirit in Eastern theology. The importance of the Holy Spirit has recently gone through a renewal of interest in the Roman Catholic church. The basis of our belief in God is trinitarian. We believe in God, who is in the Son, and who uses the Holy Spirit to reach across to us.

of the Word

¥ Why did Jesus, the immortal one,

have to die?

He said that he had to go yet he would be with us to the end of time. He would send the Holy Spirit as our comforter and helper. In this way we will be connected to God now and always.
