June 22, 2003 Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ Cycle B

FIRST READING:

Ex. 24: 3-8 "This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 116 "The cup of salvation I will raise: I will call on the Lord's name." or "Alleluia."

SECOND READING:

Heb. 9: 11-15 "The blood of Christ will purify our inner selves."

SEQUENCE:

"Sing forth, O Zion, sweetly sing."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Jn. 6: 51-22 "I am the living bread from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats this bread will live for ever."

GOSPEL:

Mk. 14: 12-16, 22-26 "This is my body. This is my blood."

FOCUS: To participate in the Eucharist is to experience Christ among us. This is the food that gives us union with Jesus.

REFLECTION: I pray you, O most gentle Jesus, having redeemed me by baptism from original sin, so now by your Precious Blood, which is offered and received throughout the world, deliver me from all evils, past, present and to come. And, by your most bitter death, give me a lively faith, a firm hope, and a perfect charity, so that I may love you with all my heart, all my soul, and all my strength; make me firm and steadfast in good works and grant me oerseverance in your service so that I may be able to please you always.

St. Clare of Assisi

"I am the living bread from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats this bread will live for ever."

Do you want to honor Christ's body? Then... do not honour him here in church by wearing silk, while you neglect him outside the church where he is cold and naked.

St. John Chrysotom

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Through the Eucharist, Jesus gives us the capacity to nourish the lives around us with love.

Introductory Rite:

The Rite of Sprinkling with Holy Water: Make a connection between the Eucharist and the covenant made between God and us at baptism. Or

Penitential Rite: Third, with sixth set of sample invocations.

General Intercessions:

Introduction: My sisters and brothers, through this common prayer, let us honor the love of Christ shown to us in the Eucharist.

¥ For the holy Church of God: that the Lord guide and protect us.

¥ For all the peoples of the world: that

the Lord unite us in peace and harmony;

¥ For all our sisters and brothers in need: that the Lord strengthen us all through his body and blood;

¥ For ourselves and our community: that we offer an acceptable sacrifice.

Emphasize the liturgy of the Eucharist through a special ritualized preparation of the Altar during the preparation of the gifts.

Preface: Second preface for the Holy Eucharist

Singing the Eucharistic prayer can further emphasize this period as the central part of our Sunday gathering. Consider using the second eucharistic prayer for children. This prayer is full of responses for the assembly and has a capacity to involve the assembly more deeply in the liturgy.

Concluding Rite:

Prayers over the People: Third or eighteenth

Faith Formation

The Eucharist gives us the grace and strength to live like Jesus told us to, with love for everyone.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

The liturgy contains the most important food of all:the Eucharist. This is the food that Jesus gave us to help us experience God.

From the time St. Clare (1193-1253) first heard St. Francis speak, she was determined to follow him to God. Later joined by her mother and her sister, she founded the Franciscan Order for women now known as the Poor Clares.
