July 6, 2003 Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary TIme Cycle B

FIRST READING:

Ezek. 2: 2-5 "The people are rebellious, they shall know there will be a prophet in their midst."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 123 "Our eyes are on the Lord till he show us his mercy."

SECOND READING:

2 Cor. 12: 7-10 "I will glory in my infirmities so that the power of Christ may dwell in me."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Lk. 4: 18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me: he sent me to bring Good News to the poor."

GOSPEL:

Mk. 6: 1-6 "A prophet is despised only in his own country."

FOCUS: The prophetic mission of Jesus is met with contempt. The people of his own town dismiss him and his teaching with scorn.

REFLECTION: Even though the poor are often rough and unrefined, we must not judge them from external appearances nor from the mental gifts they have received. On the contrary, if you consider the poor in the light of faith, then you will observe that they are taking the place of the Son of God who chose to be poor. Although in his passion he almost lost the appearance of a man and was considered a fool by the Gentiles and a stumbling block to the Jews, he showed them that his mission was to preach to the poor.

St. Vincent de Paul

The first vital step in saving outcasts consists in making them feel that some decent human being cares enough for them to take an interest in the question of whether they are to rise or sink.

William Booth,

founder of the Salvation Army

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me: he sent me to bring Good News to the poor."

Give us a pure heart that we may

see you,

A humble heart that we may hear

you,

A heart of love that we may serve

you,

A heart of faith that we may

abide in you.

Dag Hammarskjold

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by saying we too have been sent to bring the Good News to the poor. Not just poor financially, but the poor in faith, the poor in love.

Let the liturgy recognize and unite the individuals who make up the congregation. We need to respect others for within them is the Lord.

Penitential Rite: third with seventh set of sample invocations

General Intercessions

Introduction: Let us pray with humility, simplicity and confidence to God our Father, who is in our midst and lives among us:

¥ For the holy Church of God: that the

Lord guide and protect it;

¥ For all peoples of the world: that the Lord unite us in peace and harmony;

¥ For all our sisters and brothers in need: that through the Lord we may assist them;

¥ That our community may have the faith and strength to bear witness to Christ's presence.

Preface: : Second for Sundays in Ordinary Time.

Concluding Rite:

Prayers over the people:

Twenty-second

Faith Formation

How can we bring the Gospel to the poor? What is the Gospel? What methods have others used to bring the Gospel to the poor?

Poor doesn't mean just having no money. Who can you share the good news with? Telling people about Jesus usually does little to help them. We have to show them with our lives.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

What can we do to help the poor? Have the children do concrete, practical things to bring the love of God to the poor. Things such as growing or collecting food for a food bank, visiting an old or lonely person in the community. Pick a project and stay with it for a while, so the children will get comfortable with it.
