August 10, 2003  Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time   Cycle B
FIRST READING:
1 Kings 19: 4-8 "Strengthened by the food, he walked to the mountains of the Lord."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 34 "Taste and see that the Lord is good."
SECOND READING:
Eph. 4: 30; 5: 2 "Walk in love, just as Christ did."
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Jn. 6: 51-52 "I am the living bread from heaven, says the Lord; if anyone eats this bread he will live for ever."
GOSPEL:
Jn. 6: 41-51 "I am the living bread that came down from heaven."

FOCUS: "Jesus is the living bread from heaven; if anyone eats this bread he will live forever." God urges us to seek Jesus that we may have eternal life.

REFLECTION: Jesus Christ found a way by which he could ascend into heaven and yet remain on the earth. He instituted the adorable Sacrament of the Eucharist so that he might stay with us and be the Food of our soul; that he might stay with us and be our companion. St. John Vianney

The proper effect of the Eucharist is the transformation of man into God.
                           St. Thomas Aquinas

 "Strengthened by the food, he walked to the mountains of the Lord."

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy with the idea that the Word and the Eucharist are more than spiritual tools; they feed us eternally with God's love. Jesus is the Way to eternal life in Heaven with God. Love is the only  way to overcome death.
 Lamb of God fraction rite.

Penintential rite: third form with sixth set of invocations
General Intercessions:
Introduction:  Gathered together in Christ as sisters and brothers, let us
call to mind that God is the living bread that brings us to Him eternally.
¥ For all who have dedicated themselves to God, that he will help us to be faithful to our promise;
¥ For peace among nations, that we may banish aggression from our hearts;
¥ For the aged who suffer from loneliness and infirmity, that we will sustain them by our love;
¥ For all of us gathered here, that God
will lead us closer to him and to the eternal blessings he promises.
Preface: Second or Fourth  for Sundays in Ordinary Time
Concluding Rite:
Prayers over the People:  Eighteen
or Twenty
Faith Formation
  Love, rather than great knowledge, is required of the community of followers of Christ; compassion, not intelligence, not good looks. Social and business success are not required, nor are power and authority, but humility is required, of everyone.

Children's Liturgy of the Word
  What do we mean when we say Jesus is the way to heaven? How does the Eucharist help us to get to heaven? The Eucharist is the body and blood of Christ, Our Savior. If we do what he says to do, namely love God and one another, we will deserve to go to heaven.
