July 27, 2003    Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time   Cycle B
FIRST READING:
2 Kings 4: 42-44  "They will eat, and have some left over."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 145 "You open wide your hand, O Lord, and grant our desires."
SECOND READING:
Eph. 4: 1-6  "There is one body, one Lord, one faith, one baptism."
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Lk. 7: 16 "A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people."
GOSPEL:
Jn. 6: 1-15 "He distributed as much as they wanted to those who were seated."

FOCUS: The sign of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes shows us God, the Father of All, is the source of spiritual nourishment to all. His mercy omits no one.

REFLECTION: There is only one God and He is God to all; therefore it is important that everyone is seen as equal before God. I've always said we should help a Hindu become a better Hindu, a Muslim become a better Muslim, a Catholic become a better Catholic.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta
  It would be wrong to think that since communion with God is the supreme aim of man, it will be granted only at some later time,  for instance at the end of all our labours. No, here and now it must be our constant and unceasing state. When we have no communion with God, and do not feel Him within us, we must recognize that we have turned away from our aim and from the way chosen for us.
 Theophane the Recluse

There is one body, one Lord, one faith, one baptism

  A woman who was visiting my sister apologized for keeping her from her prayers. She replied, "God Himself asks us to be hospitable. To greet and serve you with love and peace, that is my prayer. And it is my joy."
Sr. M. Agnita

  Be merry, really merry. The life of the true Christian should be perpetual jubilee:a prelude to the festivals of eternity,
St. Theophane Vernard

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: The first reading and the psalm present the image of God the source of spiritual nourishment.Through Christ we receive that nourishment.
General Intercessions:
Introduction:  My dear brothers and sisters, God our Father is our origin and guide. He hears the prayers of all of us. Let us praise God, whose gifts are without measure.
¥ For the Church of God: that we will joyfully proclaim and live our faith in Christ the eternal gift from God;
¥ For peace and well-being of the whole world, that God's gift to us in this life will lead us to salvation in the life to come;
¥ For our community and our families, who welcome Christ into their lives:  that we may receive  him in the poor and suffering people of this world.

Preface: Sixth for Sundays in Ordinary Time
Introduce the breaking of the bread by referring to the multiplication of the loaves taking place within the Eucharist.
Concluding Rite:
Prayers over the People:
 18, 19 , or 23
Faith Formation
   God is the source of all. He is over all, and through all, and in all. So how do we account for evil? Some things we may have called evil, are not. Sickness and  death are not evil. They are part of the structure of our world.  Neither is sex evil. It is a joy that carries with it heavy responsiblities.
