FIRST READING:

Deut. 4: 1-2, 6-8 "You may add nothing to the word which I speak to you:keep the commands of the Lord."

Moses spoke to the people telling them to observe the laws and customs. By keeping the commandments the people of Israel will demonstrate their wisdom and understanding.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 15 "Lord, who shall be admit- ted to your tent?"

SECOND READING:

James 1: 17-18, 21-22, 27 "Be doers of the word." All goodness comes from above. Don't just listen to the word. Do what the word tells you to do. Pure religion is this: to come to the help of widows and orphans and to remain unspoiled by the world.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

James 1: 18 "The Father gave us birth by his message of truth, that we might be as the first fruits of his creation."

GOSPEL:

Mk. 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23 "You forget the commandments of God and hold on to the traditions of men." Jesus responded with the words of Isaiah about paying lip service to the Law but being far away from God in their hearts. Jesus went further to proclaim that nothing that goes into people can make them unclean, it is the things that come out of them that contaminate them.

FOCUS: It is that which comes from the heart that can make one unclean. Interior motives determine the ultimate worth of our actions.

REFLECTION: What we possess beyond what is necessary for life, we are obliged to do good with.

St. Basil

The Father gave us birth by his message of truth, that we might be as the first fruits of his creation."

May the Lord help you to be fully alive and to preserve sobriety. But do not forget the chief thing, to unite the attention and mind with your heart, and remain there unceasingly, before the Lord. Every effort that you make in prayer must be directed towards this. Pray to the Lord, that He may give you this blessing: it is the treasure hidden in the field, the pearl beyond price.

Theophane the Recluse

Every gun that is made, every warship lauched, every rocket fired signifies, in a final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

Dwight D. Eisenhower

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduction to the Liturgy: True religion, in the word of James, is coming to the help of orphans and widows. We are called beyond lip service, formal ritual, and strict observance of the law to exist in the spirit and depth of the law. We are required by Our Lord to help the homeless and hungry, the poor and dirty, and he gives us the grace to do so. Let us begin by praying for all of God's loved ones.

Penitential Rite: Third form with

fourth set of sample invocations

Sample General Intercessions:

Introduction: My brothers and sisters, let us pray in love, let us ask God to strengthen us in our love so that we can live in the light of the Gospels:

For those who are called to lead and serve, that they live up to the spirit of the Gospels;

For peace among nations, that we go beyond wanting peace to creating it, in ourselves;

For those who suffer from hunger, sickness or loneliness, that they may be comforted by the steadfastness of God's love;

For all of us gathered here, that God will strengthen us to live the way he wants us to, in love and peace.

Eucharistic Prayer: Fourth

Concluding Rite:

Prayers over the People: Second or Sixth

Faith Formation

What did you accomplish this week?

Children's Liturgy of the Word

Food drives, banquets for whoever wants to come, growing gardens of vegetables for those who need them, writing letters to people in nursing homes, collecting warm clothing for children who need it, and so on; chose one and do it, as a tradition in your group. Help the children develop their spiritual talents. Give them a way to love God, and one another.
