FIRST READING:

Wis. 2: 12, 17-20 "Let us condemn him to a most shameful death." The godless say: let us persecute the virtuous man for God will rescue him.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 54 "The Lord upholds my life."

SECOND READING:

James 3: 16-4; 3 "The fruit of righteousnesse is the harvest of peacemakers from seeds sown in a spirit of peace." Jealousy and ambition lead to disharmony and disturbed actions. Wisdom from God leads to compassion and good actions. We must not pray for the indulgence of our desires.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

2 Thess. 2: 14 "God has called us with the gospel; the people won for him by Jesus Christ our Lord."

GOSPEL:

Mark 9:30-37 "The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of man... If anyone wishes to be first, he must make himself the servant of all."

Jesus and his disciples passed through Galilee, where Jesus told the disciples that he would rise three days after being put to death. They did not understand what he was saying.Upon arriving in Capernaum Jesus taught them that if they want to be first, they must make themselves last and servant of all.

FOCUS: Some disciples of Jesus argued about who was the greatest among them. Jesus picked up a child and said "If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be last... Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives not me, but the One who sent me." Humility is the essential ingredient in living spiritually.

God has called us with the gospel; the people won for him by Jesus Christ our Lord.

REFLECTION: If you should ask me what are the ways of God, I would tell you that the first is humility, the second is humility and the third is still humility. Not that there are no other precepts to give, but if humility does not precede all that we do, our efforts are fruitless.

St. Augustine

He suffers the greatest persecution of all who lives under none. A storm puts a man on his guard and obliges him to exert his utmost efforts to avoid shipwreck.

St. Jerome

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by stating that the humble are often besieged by enemies, but the Lord upholds their lives. Dedication to service could be demonstrated by a special ceremony at the presentation of the gifts. Invite children up to the altar for the consecration as a sign of our desire to include them in our spiritual lives.

Sample General Intercessions:

Introduction: My beloved brothers and sisters, may all who follow Christ devote themselves to humility. Let us pray to God, who elevates the humble:

Ľ For all those who gather in the Holy Spirit of God, that he will help them to be faithful to the call of the gospel;

Ľ For peace among nations, that God may instill humility into the hearts of world leaders;

Ľ:For the aged who suffer from loneliness and infirmity, that we will sustain them by our lives;

Ľ For all of us gathered here, that God will teach us to use in humility the good things he has given us, that they will lead us closer to him and to eternal blessing.

Faith Formation

Humility involves simplicity, and willingness to yield. To be humble is not merely to be simple and childish. It is to have respect for those with whom we live, to see God in all people at all times.

Mother Teresa did not receive fame by wealth or power, by athletic skill, or political position. On the contrary, she became known for her dedication to helping the poorest of the poor in India. She was great because she was willing to serve everyone. By serving others, caring for their needs, for love of God, we become great in the most important way.
