FIRST READING: Hos.6: 3-6
"God desires love, not sacrifice."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 50 1:8 12-13, 14-15
"To the upright I will show the saving power of God."

SECOND READING: Rom. 4: 18-25
Faith is credited as justice.

GOSPEL: Matt. 9: 9-13
Jesus eats with the tax collectors.

FOCUS: "I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the
righteous, but the sinners."

REFLECTION: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ: in all my trials and
sufferings you have given me the strengh to stand firm; in your mercy you
have granted me a share of eternal glory
Irenaeus, Greek Prelate

Let us adore Jesus in our hearts, who spent thirty years of thirty-three in
silence; who began his public life by spending forty days in silence; who
often retired alone to spend the night on a mountain in silence. He who
spoke with authority, now spends his earthly life in silence. Let us adore
Jesus in the eucharistic silence.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Live in faith and hope, though it be in darkness, for in this darkness God
protects the soul. Cast your care upon God for you are His and He will not
forget you. Do not think that He is leaving you alone, for that would be to
wrong him.
St. John of the Cross

Invisible in his own nature he became visible in ours. Beyond our grasp, he
chose to come within our grasp. Existing before time began, he began to
exist at a moment in time. Incapable of suffering as God, he did not refuse
to be man, capable of suffering. Immortal, he chose to be subject to the
laws of death."
Leo the Great

Miracles happen, not in opposition to nature, but in opposition to what we
know of nature.
St. Augustine

Sing with joy to God

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by repeating
that Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners; he was merciful even at
great risk to himself. Jesus is not rigid, he is merciful. Let us learn from
his mercy in the face of opposition.

SPRINKLING RITE

PENITENTIAL RITE: third, with seventh set of sample invocations.

General Intercessions—
Introduction: My dear brothers and sisters, let us always allow our mercy
to shine forth.

• That Christians everywhere may be responsive to God's mercy;

• That people everywhere may work for peace;

• That all who have grown complacent in faith may turn to God again and be
reconciled as visionaries of a better world;

• That our community and families who welcome Christ into their lives,
always be aware of His mercy.

Introduce the breaking of the bread by proclaiming the power of love has
triumphed in the person of Jesus, the one we now receive.

PREFACE: #6 or #7 or Sundays of Ordinary Time

PRAYERS OVER THE PEOPLE:
#2or #16

Faith Formation
Jesus shows us that we must be merciful in all our actions, even when doing
so will have results that may harm us. How far shall we go with this? All
the way. Jesus laid down his life for us. How shall we perform these acts of
mercy? Wisely, with discerment and with great love.

Children's Liturgy
of the Word
The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for many centuries. Then God brought
them forth into freedom, and now they owned slaves. Two points here: 1) we
must be merciful, just as God is merciful; 2) things go from bad to good,
and from good to bad. Don't be happy be cause you are getting your own way
right now. It won't last long. And don't be unhappy when you don't get your
own way any more. That will change, too.
