FIRST READING:
2 Sam 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 80 "God of hosts, bring us back; let your face shine on us and we shall be saved."

SECOND READING:
1 Cor. 1: 3-9 "The revelation we looked for, Christ Jesus our Lord."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Ps. 85: 8 "Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation."

GOSPEL: Mk. 13: 33-37
"Stay awake! You never know when the Lord will come."

FOCUS: "Stay awake for you know not when the master of the house returns." Death can come suddenly and unexpectedly. Be ready to be in the presence of God.

REFLECTION: Don't imagine that if you had a great deal of time you would spend more of it in prayer. Get rid of that idea! Again and again God gives more in a moment than in a long period of time, for his actions are not measured by time at all.
St. Theresa of Avila

Your fellow men are marvelously enriched by your contemplation, even if you may not fully understand how; the souls in purgatory are touched, for their suffering is eased by the effects of this work, and, of course, your own spirit is purified and strengthened by contemplative work more than by all others put together.

The Cloud of Unknowing

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: The mood of the liturgy in Advent is one of anticipation and preparation. We prepare for the anniversary of Our Savior's birth, we prepare for the Second Coming, and we prepare for our own deaths. We prepare to see God.

Sprinkling rite or
Penitential rite: Third form with second set of sample invocations

Sample General Intercessions:
My brothers and sisters, as we prepare for the coming of Christ let us thank God for his mercy. In Jesus, the face of God has illuminated us and we have been saved from death:
For the Holy Church of God, may we remain attentive and awake to the needs of all people;
For those who work for peace and mercy, may our vigilance be strengthened;
For those in positions of authority, that the Lord Jesus will guide them to seek good for all humankind;
For all those deprived of freedom because of what they believe or what they are, that our mercy will deliver them from oppression;
For our parish and local community, that Christ will find us watchful and ready at his coming;
For each of us here, may we all be ready for God with a clean soul and a heart full of love.

By placing emphasis on the memorial acclamation and the Lord's Prayer we bring to mind the eschatological element in the liturgy.
Memorial acclamation: Second or third
The Lord's Prayer: See fourth sample invitation to prayer

Prayers over the people: First or sixteenth
or
Solemn Blessing in Advent

Faith Formation
To live in the constant light of the gospel, is to be ready to see God. On the day of judgement our money, our intelligence, our social standing will be of no importance, only how we have loved.
Belief in the Second Coming reveals our deep yearnings and aspirations for love and fulfillment, for all to be complete. The Second Coming will be a time when God will be revealed to us completely, and henceforth, we will be with Him forever and ever.

Children's Liturgy of the Word
In preparation for Christmas we suggest the children learn to sing what is probably a new song for them but is actually very old. The Birds Praise the Advent of the Saviour is a delightful Fifteenth Century Christmas carol from Catalan, now a region of Spain and France. The music is available from:
Theodore Presser Co.
1 Bryn Mawr Place
Bryn Mawr, PA
Presser provides a beautiful a capella arrangement. Almost a round, it is easy to learn and fun to sing. The children can add their own creative bird calls, within the bounds of the dignity of the Christmas season.
