FIRST READING:
Gen. 3: 9-15, 20 "I will put enmity between your offspring and her offspring."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 98 "Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders."

SECOND READING:
Eph. 1: 3-6, 11-12 "God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Lk. 1: 28, 42 "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women."

GOSPEL:
Lk. 1: 26-38 "Rejoice, favored one, the Lord is with you."
The angel Gabriel comes to Mary telling her to rejoice for she has found favor with God. She will bear the Son of God through the power of the Holy Spirit.

FOCUS: "Rejoice, O highly favored daughter! The Lord is with you."

REFLECTION: "He who wrote on the tablets of stone without iron made Mary with child of the Holy Ghost; and He who produced bread in the desert without ploughing, impregnated the Virgin without corruption; and He who made the rod to bud without rain made the daughter of David without seed."
St. Augustine of Hippo

"Miracles happen, not in opposition to nature, but in opposition to what we know of nature."
St. Augustine

"I remember your writing to tell me that you get a headache when you try to hold fast your attention. Yes, if you work only with the head, that is what will happen; but when you descend into the heart there will be no strain at all. The head will become empty and there will be an end to thoughts. They are always in the head, chasing one another, and it is not possible to control them. But if you enter the heart, and are able to remain in it, then every time thoughts begin to confuse you, you have only to descend into the heart and the thoughts will flee. It will be a comforting and safe haven. Do not be lazy about descending. In the heart is life, and you must live there. Do not think that this is something to be attempted only by the perfect. No, it is for everyone who has begun to seek the Lord."Theophane the Recluse

"God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world."

Right indeed it is and just, proper and for our welfare, that we should always and everywhere give thanks . . . for through the mystery of the Word made flesh thy splendor has shone before our mind's eye with a new radiance, and through him whom we recognize as God made visible, we are carried away in love of things invisible. Sheed and Ward Missal

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: The word of God has special significance in today's readings. Mary, bearer of the "Living Word," responds to the word of God spoken through the angel Gabriel. A bold displaying and incensing of the Holy Books at the gathering rite would be one way to demonstrate reverence for the word of God. Litanies and mantras to Mary as well as appropriate periods of silence will help to inspire. Introduce the profession of faith by citing Mary as an example of the power of faith in one's life.

Faith Formation
Mary is a role model for Christians because of her faith and acceptance of God's will for her. We go through times of confusion and doubt. At times we may feel we are plunging into the unknown and even into darkness itself. This is why Mary is so important to us. Through faith she was able to attain extraordinary stature. This is the case with many of the church's saints. They were ordinary people called by God to live extraordinary lives.
Say the Hail Mary frequently. You'll find it helps. A favorite prayer of Catholics for centuries, it is a gift from Christ Himself, through the gospels.

Children's Liturgy of the Word
What do you suppose it was like being the child of the woman who was most blessed among women? She must have been a gentle, loving mother. What must it have been like for her, being the mother of such an awesome child?
Jesus had a large family. His grandparents were St. Anne and St. Joaquin. He had an uncle and aunt, St. Zachary and St. Elizabeth, and a cousin, St. John the Baptist. And many others are mentioned in the New Testament, and in other historical books. They lived 2,000 years ago in what is now Israel. Then it was a Roman colony. Do a little research and talk about life in the days of Christ's childhood..
