Journey into Self Discovery

Is. 42: 1-4, 6-7 "Here is my servant, my chosen one in whom my soul delights." or
(new) opt: Isa 55:1-11 "All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk!"

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 29 "The Lord will bless his people with peace." or
(new) opt: Isa 12:2-3, 4bcd, 5-6
"With joy you will draw water at the fountain of salvation."

SECOND READING:
Acts 10: 34-38 "God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power." or
(new) opt: 1 John 5:1-9
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves (also) the one begotten by him.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Mk. 9: 6 "The heavens were opened and the Father's voice was heard: this is my beloved Son; hear him."

GOSPEL:
(new) Mark 1:7-11 One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the holy Spirit."

FOCUS: "This is my beloved Son; hear him." Jesus is inaugurated into his earthly ministry.

scriptural topics: Lamb of God, call of God, receptivity, discipleship, , obedience

REFLECTION: "...the moral strength of the spirit is effected by the regenerating action of baptism, through which man is granted justification and the strength to act after God in righteousness and true holiness." Theophane the Recluse

"Through Christ we see as in a mirror the spotless and excellent face of God." St. Clement of Rome
"Smile. It makes everyone feel good. Let anyone who comes to you go away feeling better and happier. Every one should see goodness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile. Joy shows from the eyes, it appears when we speak and walk. It cannot be kept closed inside us It reacts outside. Joy is very infectious." Mother Teresa of Calcutta

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: This celebration brings the Christmas season to a glorious end with God saying, "This is my beloved Son; hear him." With that introduction (!), Jesus ends his hidden years and begins his mission on earth. He now goes forth into the world with the Good News of God's salvation through through love. Hearing the message of Jesus, we, too, go forth to reveal God's love to the world. This is an appropriate time to call for lay ministers, people who want to follow Christ and bring his light to others. Current lay ministers should be recognized and thanked; they could contribute to the bulletin or the homily on the function and value of their ministry, and invite people to join them.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYER SELECTIONS:
Sprinkling rite or
Penitential rite: Third form with third set of invocations.
Prayers over the people: Ninth

Solemn Blessing for Christmas
or
Solemn Blessing for Epiphany

Give to the Lord all glory and praise

Faith Formation
In the Eastern Church there is a practice known as the "Poustinia" which is Russian for desert. It involves the practice of going into seclusion to pray. The object is to leave the distractions of the world temporarily so that peace and the awareness of God may be internalized and give one strength to live in the world.
To interiorize solitude is to be able to draw from that well of strength even in the clamor of daily life.
Meditate on the solemnity, the significance, the sublimity, of the incarnation.

Children's Liturgy of the Word
Recount, with the children's help, the entire Christmas story from the Annunciation to the Baptism. Emphasize that this is God we are talking about here.
What does it mean, to hear Jesus? It means to pay attention to what Jesus says and does. Watch him, live like him. How can we reveal God's love to the world like Jesus did? Mother Teresa did it by tending the dying. The Little Flower did it by being kind and loving to all those around her. There are as many ways as there are people. Smile. That's a start.
