Journey into Self Discovery

FIRST READING: Lev. 13: 1-2, 44-46 As long as he is unclean, he must live alone, outside the camp.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 32 I turn to you, Lord, in times of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.

SECOND READING:
1 Cor. 10: 31:11-1 God in his wisdom predestined our glory before the ages began.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
See Lectionary 164; Alleluia

GOSPEL: Mt. 1: 40-45
He sent the leper from him and he was cured.

FOCUS: I have come not to abolish the law or the prophets but to complete them. Jesus taught that his law is not about what we can and cant do. Instead, we are given a new understanding: Not only our actions but even our thoughts and yearnings affect our ability to love God and all his children.

scriptural topics: healing, compassion, imitation of Christ, purification.

REFLECTION:
As he thinketh in his heart, so is he.
Proverbs 23:7

On a journey, a monk ran into a party of handmaids of the Lord. Seeing them he gave them a wide berth. But the Abbess said to him: If you were a perfect monk, you would not even have looked close enough to see that we were women.
Wisdom of the Desert Fathers

Two hermits encounter one another and respond with warm affection. They do not hesitate, or assess each other, they make no judgements. They open wide their arms. To accept people as they are without wanting to change them, is the essence of love.
Sister Wendy Beckett describing a 7th Century minature

I turn to you, Lord, in times of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the Sprinkling Rite: through the waters of baptism we have arrived in a land without borders, where there is new meaning to Gods law. Introduce the breaking of the bread: the Eucharist is a source of the grace we need to transform our thoughts and hearts so that we can live in this new land. Other sources of grace include being with people who love God (a wide-armed gesture could be used here), and prayer.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYER SELECTIONS:
Preface for Sundays in O.T.:
Seventh
Sample General Intercessions:
My brothers and sisters, let us pray to God who does wondrous things for us, because He loves us:
¥ For the Holy Church of God, that it
remain attentive and awake to the
needs of all people;
¥ For those who work for peace and
mercy, that they may have the
strength they need;
¥ For those in positions of authority,
that the Lord Jesus will guide them
to seek good for all humankind;
¥ For all those deprived of freedom be-
cause of what they believe or what
they are, that God will deliver them
from oppression;
¥ For our parish and local community
that Christ will find us
watchful and ready at his coming;
¥ May I have the discernment, O
Lord, to understand your Way and
to follow it all my life.
Prayers over the people:

Faith Formation
¥ What does the gospel say about
our inner thoughts?
Gods grace is necessary to achieve the peace of mind we need to do his bidding: Love thy neighbor as thyself. Lucky for us, Gods grace is coming right at us at all times. All we have to do is open our eyes to see it, open our hearts to feel it. God loves us. He loves Protestants and Catholics alike, and Muslims and Hindus, too.

Childrens Liturgy
of the Word
In todays gospel, Jesus tells us it isnt enough to be nice to people, in our hearts we have to really wish them well. This means accepting all Gods creatures as lovable, it means wanting other people to be happy, it means sincerely forgiving those who wrong us. Its not just that we cant be vindictive, it also means no desire for revenge, no desire to even the score*. Sometimes we have to just put things out of our minds and go on with following Jesus.
*A sports metaphor that older children understand. Pointing out a metaphor or analogy offers an opportunity to talk about teaching devices in general, methods of getting a point across.
