Journey into Self Discovery

 FIRST READING:
Gen. 9: 8-15 I will recall the covenant between myself and you, the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 25 Your ways, Lord, are faithfulness and love to those who keep your convenant.
SECOND READING:
1 Pet. 3: 18-22 The water of the flood is a type of the baptism which saves you now.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Mt. 4: 4 One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
GOSPEL:
Mk. 1: 12-15 He was tempted by Satan, and the angels looked after him.

FOCUS: Jesus withdrew into the desert, fasting and praying for forty dayus. He was with wild beasts and angels took care of him.
scriptural topics: penance, temptation, history of salvation, sin/grace
REFLECTION: Love God with all your heart, and youve nothing to fear; death or punishment, judgement or hell; love, when it reaches its full growth, is an unfailing passport to Gods presence.
Thomas ˆ KempisChristianity is a movement away from justice (an eye for an eye) toward mercy (love your neighbor as youself; love your enemies–even Philistines love their friends). Are you ready to be a Christian? In your heart? Christ is ready for you. Promise today to obey his commandment that we love one another as He loves us.You wont be sorry.
St. Thomas More
APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy today by stating that as Jesus entered the desert to be subjected to temptation, so too must we enter a desert. The desert we enter is that of prayer and fasting so that we will be able to recognize and withstand the temptations in our lives.
Penitential Rite: Third form with fourth set of sample invocations.
Sample General Intercessions:
My dear brothers and sisters, we should pray at all times, at all times, but especially during the season of Lent and the Passion and Death of Christ we should faithfully keep watch with Jesus.
• For Christians everywhere: that they enter the desert of the soul to become closer to God;
• For all those who work for peace: that they find their strength in Gods love;
• For us and our community: that each of us seriously pursues a life based on love and prayer.
Preface: See preface for second Sunday of Lent.
Lords Prayer: See third set of sample invocations.
Solemn Blessing: See blessing for the Passion of the Lord.
One does
not live
by bread alone but by every word that streams forth from the mouth of God.

Faith Formation
Discuss the three incidents of temptation experienced by Jesus in the desert:
1. Tell theses stones to turn into loaves.
2. If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down.
3. I will give you all of these if you fall at my feet.
• How does the response Not on bread alone shall we live, challenge our sense of priorities?
• How does the notion of putting God to the test relate to the battle of wills between us and God?
• What does ones seeking after great earthly wealth reveal ?

of the Word
What does the word temptation mean to children? What are they tempted to do? How does avoiding temptations prepare us for Easter? For life?
Relate these reflections back to the idea of covenant: God loves us unconditionally-—can we love others as He loves us?
