June 25, 2006 Tweflth Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle B
FIRST READING: Job 38: 1, 8-11 "Here I have set the boundaries of the sea."
RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 107 "O give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures for ever."
SECOND READING:
2 Cor. 5: 14-17 "All things are made new."
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Lk. 7: 16 "A great prophet has appeared among us: God has visited his people."
GOSPEL: Mk. 4: 35-41 "Who can this be? Even the wind and the sea obey him."
FOCUS: Jesus rebukes the wind and calms the storm. Like the storm-tossed boat, the people of God go through the storms and
turbulence of life. Jesus, empowered by the Father calms our storm-tossed lives.
SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: Power of Nature; Newness, Prophets; Might of God; Love; Endurance
REFLECTION: "Live in faith and hope, though it be in darkness, for in this darkness God protects the soul. Cast your care
upon God for you are his and He will not forget you. Do not think that He is leaving you alone, for that would be to wrong
him. St. John of the Cross
"Let nothing disturb thee, nothing afright thee; all things are passing, God never changes. Patient endurance attaineth to
all things. Who sees God in nothing is wanting; God alone suffices."
St. Theresa of Avila
"Love God with all your heart, and you’ve nothing to fear; death or punishment, judgement or hell; love, when it reaches
its full growth, is an unfailing passport to God’s presence." Thomas ˆ Kempis
All things are made new.
"When St. Paul ‘s voice was raised to preach the gospel to all nations, it was like a great clap of thunder in the sky.
His preaching was a blazing fire carrying all before it. It was the sun rising in full glory. Infidelity was consumed by it,
false beliefs fled away, and the truth appeared like a great candle lighting the whole world with its brilliant flame."
St. Bernadino of Siena
APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: The first reading and the psalm atest to the astounding love of God, who controls
and uses all of nature. The gospel recounts the calming of the storm, a visable sign of the releationship between Jesus and
the Father.
General Intercessions:
Introduction: My brothers and sisters, a great prophet has appeared among us; let us pray to God who dwells among us.
¥ That Christians everywhere may be responsive to the word of God and bear witness to the gospel;
¥ That people everywhere may work for peace to assist in God’s salvation;
¥ That all who have grown complacent in faith may turn to God again and be reconciled as bearers of the gospel;
¥ That our community and families who welcome Christ into their lives, receive him in all peoples throughout the world.
Preface: First or Fifth preface for Ordinary Time
Concluding Rite:
Prayers over the People: 24
RCIA/Faith Formation
The miracle of the calming of the storm is a good representation
of God's absolute power and control over our lives. We too may feel as if Jesus is asleep and unaware of our troubles. The
gospel message is to trust that God who calms the mighty storms will calm our troubled lives.
