FIRST READING: Gen. 18: 20-32 "Lord, do not be angry if I speak." Abraham intervenes for Sodom by asking if God will destroy the just along with the unjust.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 138 "On the day I called, you answered me, O Lord."

SECOND READING:

Col. 2: 12-14 "He has made you alive with Christ for he has forgiven all our sins."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Romans 8: 15 "You have received the Spirit which makes us God's children, and in that Spirit we call God our Father."

GOSPEL: Lk. 11: 1-13

"Ask, and it will be given to you."

Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray, promising that if we knock, the door will be opened.

FOCUS: "Ask and it will be given to you, knock and the door shall be opened." True prayer is a personal dialogue with God in which we trust in God's mercy and kindness.

REFLECTION: "We are told how the monks of Egypt prayed very frequently but very briefly. Their prayer was sudden and ejaculatory so that the intense application so necessary in prayer should not vanish or lose its keenness by a slow performance." St. Augustine of Hippo

"May the Lord give you the blessing of a strong desire to stand inwardly before God. Seek and you will find. Seek God: such is the unalterable rule for all spiritual advancement. Nothing comes without work. The help of God is always ready and always near, but is only given to those who seek and work, and only to those seekers who, after putting all their own powers to the test, then cry out with all their heart: Lord, help us. So long as you hold on the Lord does not interfere. It is as though He says: ' You hope to succeed by yourself-Very well, go on trying! But however long you try you will achieve nothing.' May the Lord give you a contrite spirit, a humble and a contrite heart.Ó Theophane the Recluse

ÒYou have received the Spirit which makes us God's children, and in that Spirit we call God our Father.Ó

"Great talent is a gift of God, but it is a gift which is by no means necessary in order to pray well. This gift is required in order to converse well with humans; but it is not necessary in order to speak well with God. For that, one needs good desires, and nothing more." St. John of the Cross

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: The introduction to the liturgy could revolve around God in our midst, God who seeks dialogue with us. Consider using dialogue style responses, antiphons, responsorials, etc. Introduce the Lord's Prayer by saying that Jesus called God "Abba"or "Daddy." We too should come to God with the intimacy of a child to its parent.

General Intercessions-

Introduction: My brothers and sisters, God our Father is our origin and guide who hears the prayers of all who praise him. Let us offer our prayers to God, whose gifts are without measure.

- For the Church of God, that we will joyfully proclaim and live our faith in Christ the eternal gift from God,

- For peace and well-being of the whole world, that God's gift to us in

this life will lead us to salvation in the life to come,

- For those who suffer from hunger, sickness, or loneliness: that the gift of Christ's presence bring them health and peace,

- For our community and our families, who welcome Christ into their lives: may they learn to receive him in the poor and suffering people of this world,

Prayers over the People: 4

Faith Formation

God is a personal God who converses with us personally. We do not pray to receive favors. Prayer is dialogue with God in which we listen as well as speak. We exist together in prayer.

- What does it means to you that Jesus called God "Abba" or "Daddy"?

Discuss how the various parts of the liturgy operate in a dialogue form: the opening prayer, the responsorial psalm, the prayers of the faithful and numerous parts of the liturgy of the Eucharist. Liturgy is conversation with the Divine.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

- What is dialogue?

Have some of the children help you with the first reading, letting different children read the word of Abraham with his pleading to God.

- What makes a conversation?

Draw from this reading the idea that we should think of prayer as a conversation in which we work to get our message to God and we take time to listen for a response.

Divide the group in two. Lead them in reciting the Lord's prayer, each group reading alternate lines.
