Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle B

July 20, 2003

FIRST READING:

Jer. 23: 1-6 "The remnant of the flock I will gather to me and bring them back to their pastures."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 23 "The Lord is my shepherd: there is nothing I shall want."

SECOND READING:

Eph. 2: 13-18 "Christ is the peace between us."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Jn 10: 27 "My sheep listen to my voice, says the Lord; I know."

GOSPEL:

Mk. 6: 30-34 "They were as sheep without a shepherd."

FOCUS: "and he began to teach them many things." God sent His beloved Son to us and told us to listen to him. Let us become experts on the teachings of Jesus.

REFLECTION: Invisible in his own nature he became visible in ours. Beyond our grasp, he chose to come within our grasp. Existing before time began, he began to exist at a moment in time. Incapable of suffering as God, he did not refuse to be man, capable of suffering. Immortal, he chose to be subject to the laws of death.

Leo the Great

The Christian is in the world but not of the world... His conduct, his habits of life, his way of thinking, of making choices, of evaluating things and situations... happen in the light of Christ's words, which are a message of everlasting life.

Pope John Paul II

"My sheep listen to my voice, says the Lord..."

Keep thyself in peace, and then thou wilt be able to bring others to peace.

Thomas Kempis

Peace like charity, begins at home.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

We must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by stating that, like a shepherd, the Word and Eucharist guide and nurture us that we may guide and nuture others.

Penitential rite: third form with

seventh set of sample invocations

General Intercessions:

Introduction: Gathered together in Christ, as brothers and sisters, let us recognize the voice of Christ in our lives. Let us know the teachings of Christ and let us apply them to our lives. Let us live in love.

¥That pastors may lead in faith and serve in love the flock entrusted to their care by Christ the Good Shepherd;

¥ That the whole world may experience true peace through Christ, the only peace possible ;

¥ That our suffering sisters and brothers may have their sorrows turned to joy;

¥ÊThat our community may have the faith and strength to bear witness to the gospel of Jesus.

Preface: Sixth preface for ordinary time.

Images from Psalm 23 could be evoked in a Lamb of God fraction rite such as: "You who lead us through the valley of darkness, you who lead us beside still waters," etc.

Concluding Rite:

Prayers over the People: Sixteenth

Faith Formation

Get a copy of the New Testament with the words of Jesus in red, so you can see exactly what he said. Study the context of his words, who was he talking to, when, what event preceded the words. Study his metaphors, what are they saying? For example, the shepherd and his flock metaphor teaches us a lot of things, one of which is that God is aware of our needs, so just get on with loving each other.
