August 24, 2003  Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time   Cycle B
FIRST READING:
Jos. 24: 1-2, 15-17, 18 "We will serve the Lord God, because he is our God."
Joshua gathered the tribes of Israel and they presented themselves before God. Joshua told the people to choose today between the Lord and the gods of their ancestors.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 34 "Taste and see that the Lord is good."
SECOND READING:
Eph. 5: 21-32 "A man must leave his parents and be joined to his wife, and they will become one body.  This is the great mystery, it applies to Christ and the Church."
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Jn. 6: 64-69 "Your words, Lord, are spirit and life, you have the words of everlasting life."
GOSPEL:
Jn. 6: 60-69 "Lord, who shall we go to? You have the words of eternal life."
Unable to tolerate the words of Jesus, some of his followers complained.  Jesus knew which ones would not believe. He proclaimed that  no one can come to him unless the father allows it. Many followers left. Jesus asked his disciples if they too wanted to go away.

FOCUS:  "The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life."
The Holy Spirit animates our lives, inspiring us to respond with faith and love to God's words.

REFLECTION: It is Christ Himself, not the bible, who is the true word of God.
C. S. Lewis

"Lord, who shall we go to? You have the words of eternal life."
 APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduction to the Liturgy: Jesus left Heaven and came to us to lead us to eternal life. He is as devoted to his followers, his church, as a good and faithful spouse. He loves us.
Introductory Rite:
Penitential Rite: third form with seventh set of sample invocations.
Sample General Intercessions:
Introduction:  Let us pray with faith and love to God, the source of eternal life:
¥ For all who have dedicated themselves to God, that their message of eternal life reach the ends of the earth;
¥ For all peoples of the world, that our leaders dedicate themselves to world peace;
¥ For all our brothers and sisters in need, that God's love be made manifest in their lives;
¥ For all of us gathered here, that God will give us the strength to live in love and peace.
Preface: Second  for Sundays in Ordinary Time
Lamb of God  Fraction rite titles for Jesus from today's readings:
You are spirit
You are life
You who are head of the church
You have the words of everlasting life
You are the Holy One of God
Concluding Rite:
Prayers over the People: Fifth or twenty-fifth
Faith Formation
  The  readings and the gospel teach us that God protects and cares for us.  Where else can we turn except to Him? Where is our ultimate strength found? In God. In Jesus. In Christ Our Lord.  Who else can we go to? Christ has the message of eternal life. What is that message?

of the Word
   Let us always try to be understanding and accepting of others. In this way we are being like Jesus, which is what we have to do if we want to live with him in Heaven.
  Let us always try to be inclusive rather than exclusive. God includes everyone, so must we. Please don't lead your life as if were a big birthday party: "you are invited, you are not." God invites everyone, so must we.
