FIRST READING:
Ex. 12: 1-8, 11-14 "The law for the Passover meal: You shall eat with a belt round your waist, sandals on your feet, a staff in your hand."
RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 116 "Our blessing-cup is a communion with the Blood of Christ."
SECOND READING:
1 Cor. 11: 23-26 "For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord."
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Jn. 13: 34 "I give you a new commandment says the Lord: love one another as I have loved you."
GOSPEL:
Jn. 13: 1-15 "Now he showed how perfect was his love. He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet."
FOCUS: "If I, Teacher and Lord, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet." By serving the needs of others, we serve God.
scriptural topics:
eucharist, glory, salvation, service, humility, love
REFLECTION: "One must see God in everyone." St. Catherine Laboure
"Love your neighbor without expecting any return from him; what you do for him, Jesus counts as being done for Him."
St. Catherine of Siena
"It is easy to feel drawn to good, healthy people who have pleasant manners, but that is only natural love and not charity. A mother does not love her sick deformed child because he is lovable, but because she is his mother, and we must pray the Holy Ghost to put into our hearts that selfless devotion which nature has put into hers." Robert Bellarmine
"Invisible in his own nature he became visible in ours. Beyond our grasp, he chose to come within our grasp. Existing before time began, he began to exist at a moment in time. Incapable of suffering as God, he did not refuse to be man, capable of suffering. Immortal, he chose to be subject to the laws of death." Leo the Great
"The soul of one who loves God always swims in joy, always keeps holiday, and is always in a mood for singing." St. John of the Cross
APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: We commune with our sisters and brothers and with God ultimately through Jesus Christ, in body and blood.
The celebration of the institution of the Eucharist and the remembrance of Israel's Passover are but part of the overall theme of service.
In the ceremony of the washing of the feet, we are not merely re-enacting history. The same applies for the liturgy itself; the ritual is a genuine gesture of communal solidarity. The new directives of the sacramentary encourage Communion under both species for this day. Heightened reverence for the entire Eucharistic Prayer would be appropriate.
Sample General Intercessions:
Introduction:My sisters and brothers, through our Lord Jesus Christ, we are saved and set free, through him we find life and resurrection. Let us pray to God who reveals to us how to love:
¥ For the Holy Church, the bride of Christ: that the world may know her by her love;
¥ For the world in which we live: that God may instill within us awareness of service as the path of love;
¥ For all those afflicted, sick, or lonely:
that God may strengthen them through His love;
¥ For our families and community: that God give us the courage to reach out to those who need our love.
Preface: for the Holy Eucharist
Roman Canon for Holy Thursday.
Faith Formation
Loving service is the path to God, to eternal life and to happiness. We are here to be of service to those whom Jesus loves, that is all of us. By serving others we draw closer to Jesus who through the Holy Spirit reveals God to us. Let us meditate on how the resurrected Christ comes to us: through the Eucharist, loving service, through prayer and the sacraments, through the love we see in others, through the love we ourselves put into action in our daily lives, and...
