May 11, 2003 Fourth Sunday of Easter Cycle B

FIRST READING:

Acts 4: 8-12 "There is no salvation through anyone else."

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Ps. 118 "The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone."

SECOND READING:

1 JN. 3: 1-2 "We shall see God as He is."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Jn. 10: 14 "I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep, and mine know me."

GOSPEL:

Jn. 10: 11-18 "The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep."

FOCUS: "I am the good shepherd." Jesus reveals that he is the way through which we shall reach God.

scriptural topics: Good Shepherd, trust, safety, suffering, discernment.

REFLECTION: "As no darkness can be seen by anyone surrounded by light, so no trivialities can capture the attention of anyone who has his eyes on Christ. The man who can keep his eyes upon the head and origin of the whole universe has them on virtue in all its perfections; he has them on truth, on justice, immortality and on everything else that is good, for Christ is goodness itself."

St. Gregory of Nyssa

"A young village girl told me, When I am about to talk to anyone, I picture to myself Jesus Christ and how gracious and friendly he was to everyone." St. John Vianney

"Remembrance of God is something that God Himself grafts upon the soul. But the soul must also force itself to persevere and to toil. Work, making every effort to attain the unceasing remembrance of God. And God, seeing how fervently you desire it, will give you this constant recollection of Himself."

Theophane the Recluse

APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Emphasize that Jesus came, not merely as a teacher or judge, but to open our eyes to God, that God accepts everyone, even those rejected by others. A lamb of God fraction rite could be used based on the images from today's gospel: Jesus the shepherd, followers of Jesus as his flock, building on a corner stone, etc.

Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling with Holy Water

Sample General Intercessions:

My sisters and brothers, with joy at Christ's rising from the dead, let us turn to God in prayer. God does not reject anyone, he elevates even those rejected by others.

That pastors everywhere lead in faith and serve in love the flock entrusted to their care by Christ the Good Shepherd;

That the whole world may rejoice in the blessing of true peace, the peace Christ himself gives to us;

That those who are suffering may have their sorrow turned to joy;

That we may each have the strength and faith to bear witness to

Christ's resurrection.

Preface: Second or third for Easter.

Solemn Blessing of the Easter Season.

Prayers over the people: Sixth.

Faith Formation

Jesus, the Good Shepherd, leads us to God the Father through an uncertain world. But we may be at peace with ourselves and each other, secure in the knowledge that we are guided by love, the love that God Himself has for us all.

of the Word

What are the responsibilities in-

volved in being a shepherd?

Why is it a good idea for sheep to

follow and respond to a shepherd?

We call Jesus "Lord" because he is our leader. During the Easter season we celebrate his triumph over death and call him risen Lord. His victory over death proves to us that he is the Good Shepherd, the one who will lead us to eternal life.

Point out to the children the metaphors used here, and what is the reality they refer to. Why are metaphors used? To describe reality in ways beyond words.
